Marketcap is a meaningless metric. When you hear people linking price limits to marketcaps it’s because they are noobs.

It’s all to do with liquidity.

If the liquidity in Hex was $10mill usd then it would take $10mill to quadruple the price, and would take $20mill to 9X the price.

If the liquidity was $1mill usd it would only take $1mill to quadruple the price. $10mill would 121X the price.

If the liquidity was $1bill then $10mill would do very little to the price.

Marketcap is just last sale price multiplied by circulating supply. Why should that have any significance?

If the most recent buy order was a $100 buy, it would make the marketcap look the same as if it was $1mill buy.

Because marketcap is just last price multiplied by circulating supply. It takes no account of how big the buy was, or the liquidity, or the ratio of that buy to liquidity.

But we know from the above example that the same buy order can have a drastically different effect on price depending on its ratio to the liquidity.

For anyone who wants the math:

Fyi right now I think there’s only $12mill of liquidity in Hex

So you add whatever large buy to $12mill, divide by 12mill, and then square it. That’s the price impact.

And you do the reverse if you want to find out how much it would take to ?X the price.

For example:

I buy $5mill worth

So I add $12mill + $5mill = $17mill

$17mill / 12mill = 1.416

1.416 * 1.416 = 2x

So it would take a $5mill buy to 2x the price currently

What would it take to 100X the price?

We do the reverse, so square root of 100 = 10

The we do 10 * $12mill = $120mill

Then we do $120mill - $12mill

So it would take a buy of $108mill to 100x the price

To recap

L = Liquidity

B = Buy order

P = Price impact

((L + B) / L)² = P

((√P * L) - L) = B

Uniswap V3 makes the math more complicated but as of now most of our liquidity is still V2
