Today a beautiful thing happened in our Sociology Live Answer Writing Class
A student saw the words “non-positivist methodologies” in the question and immediately began writing
He had written the answer really well, but I told him, it won't get him marks
He must have been shocked
But here is the problem
The actual question was:
“Evaluate non-positivist methodologies in addressing sociology’s modern challenges”
He had answered the first half of the question beautifully
But he missed the second half entirely
That the question in fact demanded how those methodologies have been used in "addressing sociology’s modern challenges"
When I pointed it out, there was a brief silence
Then he wrote oh yes, yes :)
As a teacher I absolutely love such moments of realisation
Which every serious aspirant eventually experiences
That in UPSC, while knowledge is important,
But attention is equally important.
That so many students lose marks not because they don’t know the answer, but because they answer a question that wasn’t actually asked 🥲
It's just always a missing keyword
Or a neglected directive
Or, an ignored context
And, suddenly a 6/10 answer becomes a 3/10 answer
Guys, these are small mistakes
But never forget that selection is often decided by small margins
So, while yes sometimes students do need more content, but at times someone sitting beside them, catching these little errors can go a long way in making a deep impact
And, that is one of the quiet purposes of answer writing practice,
That I do not merely wish to improve what you know, but to improve what you notice
And often, that makes all the difference 😊

Okay, I’m sharing a document
It just took us some 12 months to prepare
It is the ultimate test of what we “really” do
It is our annual document of what “exactly” came from Sleepy’s classes in this years (super weird, wildest ever) Prelims
NO OTHER COACHING CENTER DOES IT
And we are proud to do it every year
Because it’s never just a student’s test, it’s always OUR test that day which we all call UPSC Prelims
Please see we are only including the EXACT content that has been taught in the classes that appeared in the exam
Any passing reference or example has not been included because only a student sitting in a class can appreciate and use that
So, presenting before all of our upsc brotherhood, Sleepy’s Annual Trust Document 🙏🙏
We need your support and blessings in keeping this fire of relevant knowledge alive as a good teacher needs a good student
So, if you or anyone you know is a possible ranker, who really wishes to work hard and is driven to get a rank, do tell them about sleepy
And about the hardwork we do all year long…
I need your love and support and we’ll keep creating historic outcomes 🙏🙏

I’ve taught economy for years
My UPSC Economy series on YT still gets many views after ages
Thinking of restarting it
And making a separate channel for it
Please do share your thoughts on how do you think I can go about it 🙏🙏

Guys.. sharing something personal
Today, was a tiring day
And in fact a very responsibly tiring day
Today, there were students from Odisha, Banaras, Jharkhand and a few other places
Some came alone, some with their parents, and then in the evening, some could not come but only sent their parents
As a teacher, it made me really happy that someone travelled across the country to learn from me and my team
But more than happiness, I think it is now bringing in a great sense of responsibility
It’s not the same as travelling to Delhi
People have been coming to Delhi since forever and I don’t know how but parents in their minds think it’s important to go to Delhi and they agree when their kid asks for it
But coming to Chandigarh ?
I mean where even is Chandigarh on the map ?
Who is sleepy ?
Is that even a name of a serious coaching ?
Are you sure you are taking the right decision ?
Then thinking of dropping their kid here for a year and trusting the process ?
Suddenly I’m feeling I’m not only carrying the responsibility of students’ academic excellence but also their parents trust
I’ll be absolutely straight forward here that I’ve never felt THIS responsible in online mode ever
I mean I’ve always been dead serious about academics and competing to win and I’m glad my team carries the same DNA
But this is something different
Trust is a heavy thing
Every student who walks in carries dreams
A lot of sacrifices by their parents
And the faith that their time here will matter
Guys, I’m grateful for all this
And most importantly for the love
And guys, I want to tell you here that I and everyone in team sleepy will be even more committed to being worthy of it 🙏
We want to make sure that you arise, awake and stop not till the goal is achieved
I just want to tell you that, we’ll not let you down 🙏🙏

Bachon answers mein thinkers kitne daalne hai is an age old question
Many toppers use a lot of them, many only a few
So, my only advice is to make the answer flow
Make the answer an answer and not just explaining the topic
Always remember, we never answer a topic, we answer a question 🙏
Create your own identity
Write a lot of answers
Get them reviewed
See if you are able to answer the questions
Don’t be arbitrarily fooled by “add these many thinkers” or “don’t add thinkers” debate
Also, you can follow this simple plan to make yourself better at Socio and make Socio help you get a rank
Information collection

Conceptual Understanding

Multi dimensional understanding

Understanding the demands of the question

Write
And your own topper self will appear 🙏

One of the best quotes read in a long time, possibly a near future essay topic, this is from the booksets of Dune:
“Once men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them”
