Something I’m trying to instil in my hyperactive little adhd-having daughter is that there is beauty and wonder in the calm, if you just stay quiet and still long enough to notice it.
We went to a stream near where we were camping, we went to swim, but ended up just sitting on a log with our feet in the water. We made floating stuff down the stream into a fun race thing, and then … we saw glass eels! Baby eels swimming up stream to grow into big eels. They were blocked, so we moved some driftwood to make it easier for them to get through without having to swim under things that house things that’d eat them! It was very special :)

We also went to the rock pools in Pukerua Bay - at first glance it’s ponds of gross dry seaweed, but once you sit and watch, we saw many anemones from big to small, snails, limpets, a hermit crab, and even the small transparent shrimp. Maybe even a small fish!
