it is my policy when referring to tragic events caused by a specific person or group to not name that person or group so as not to give undue credit or attention.
i think this is an important thing to notice when i regularly name Luigi Mangione and do not name the fraudster who he is alleged to have killed.

>need to install driver/bios updates on client computer (dell)
>dell command update wont start
>uninstall it, download the installer direct from dell
>run installer
>av detects multiple malware files. not heuristic detection, it was hash based
>installer fails
its so cool that massive international companies are just straight up dumping sewage into your computer by using their first party update applications to deliver malware directly onto sensitive business computers

the more i listen to this guy the more i like AI, which is funny because i should probably hate him.
i hope everyone involved in making that real gets phished and loses all of their money
I think that we should treat new technology more like now NASA treated the first computers ever built.
The name for the computer originated from the job that it replaced. Whenever difficult mathematical calculations needed to be made, people would use a room full of mathematicians (mostly women btw) to crunch out whatever numbers needed to be found. It was how the Russians put sputnik 1 into orbit. It was how Germans calculated v2 rocket trajectories. The earliest computers weren't able to do anything other than math. They were not programmable. They were an entire room that amounted to a calculator less powerful than a pocket calculator today.
During the Apollo missions, the shuttles had three parallel computers all executing the same instructions to ensure that if one failed the other two would override it. On top of that they had another computer back on earth AND a room full of human calculators to fact check everything the machines would output.
Today we are running headfirst into machine learning and the market hypes it up far beyond its safety and capability. Health insurers say "But computers are perfect. A computer made the decision to deny your heathcare claim and computers are perfect so that means it's correct." Police say the same thing about predictive policing. CEOs are developing AI psychosis. Richard Dawkins fell for the meme and has AI psychosis.
We really, really, need to treat AI like NASA did with early computers.

took a shit on company time β
casually posted a mass casualty death threat in the work chat
ended up getting on the phone with apple support just to make a fucking business account. i complained that i was able to manage android devices without dicking around with accounts and apple getting in my way.
the CSR replied back "well apple isnt just any other company" and i laughed at him.

people talk a lot about how great free software is. its free as in beer. its free as in freedom
using free software sometimes feels like running a brewery.
yes, all the beer you make is free.
yes, you can develop or modify the beer to fit your tastes and use cases (if you are smart enough to do that)
but you have to make the beer. is the beer really free if you had to spend hours upon hours of tinkering and maintaining a whole brewery just to make a batch that you didnt spend dollars on, but instead time?
this is a ventpost about running a mail server. it used to be worth it but german email nazis (spamhaus) have made it too difficult
i would start a class action if enough people were just as angry as i am

its also a vent post about running AI services.
setting up an agent harness on a random laptop and and using openrouter is probably the way to go if youre not doing really sensitive stuff.
(still not having buyers remorse for the 4k spark tho)
