A ZIONIST REJECTING 1930s EAST ARABIAN PENINSULA JEWISH COMMUNITY'S ANNIHILATION

The Arabian peninsula has a complicated history, including a Jewish one going back at least 2500 years. In the first half of the fifth century, Yemen was a Jewish kingdom until religious zealotry destroyed it. Even when Muhammad united the peninsula in the early second quarter of the 7th century, there were powerful Jewish tribes that existed in the peninsula with some having leaders who worked with the prophet in his unification project. Those who cooperated were fully protected and, as a result, many indigenous Arab Jewish communities continued to exist in the peninsula up until the Zionist upheavals of the 20th century.

There was once such a small community in a large commercial town in the eastern part of the Arabian peninsula, which must be left unnamed to keep the identity of the person who wrote and researched this article anonymous. When this community was annihilated in the early 1930s. it was very small with only about 80 to 90 some people. But they were indigenous. They were part of larger families that had split off from one another on account of religion and family disputes. This happened, for many, in the 7th century when Islam came to the region and certain branches of these originally Arab Jewish families converted to Islam.

But, there were other periods of separation between 200 to 400 years ago when this part of the Arabian peninsula was an Ottoman Turk province under the rule of the Bani Khalid family who later stayed on in power at the head of an independent emirate. When research on this small Arab Jewish community was being done, several people mentioned that the Ottomans had kept a record of its presence, though what archive, if any, that record survives in is unknown.

With conversion to Islam as a reason for some, but for most, in order to disassociate themselves from things that were frowned upon by society, like usury and the trade in alcoholic beverages, family names changed and ties were often cut. However, the people who converted to Islam had mostly similar occupations to those who didn't. This small, remaining, Arab Jewish community was active in trade, in the manufacturing of gold jewelry, and, at times, in making and selling alcohol.

The details of the annihilation are not clear but some were often been repeated by people who were then alive:

1- It was sudden, surgical, and very quick, with no marking of doors or anything similar. Moreover, there were no rumors circulating beforehand to indicate anything unusual was going to happen;

2- Nearly all Jewish related artifacts were eliminated, including most of those in the cemetery; and

3- It was done before the massacres of the Palestinians in the 1940's in Palestine, either on orders of the British Mandate authorities or by their implied consent.

Some alleged that it must have been a part of a deal between the government here and the British authorities, but no details connecting anyone here with anything were ever uncovered. Considering that the annihilated Arab Jewish community had rejected Zionism, it is hard not to harbor a suspicion that their annihilation was a criminal action meant to force other Arab Jews into the Zionist movement. Clandestine operations by Zionists to coerce Arab Jewish communities to migrate to occupied Palestinian lands were not foreign to the region. Many examples can be found in Iraq and Egypt of criminal acts against Jewish communities sponsored by Zionists. Such actions were used to sell the idea of a safe homeland for Jews being promoted by Zionists to legitimize their occupation of Palestine. This, thus, could also have been a tiny, throw-away, group being sacrificed for such an idea.
