🔴 The RF Armed Forces launched missile strikes against targets in #Lvov, #Poltava, #Zaporozhye, #Cherkasy, #Odessa, #Sumy, #Nikolayev and #Dnepropetrovsk regions during the night.
➖ During the day, decoys were actively used to expose the enemy's air defence system. As the day's photographs of "knocked down" balloons with corner reflectors show, this method of deceiving enemy radars is effective.
▪️ Active offensives continue in the #Soledar, #Artyomovsk (#Bakhmut) and #Maryinka directions. The RF Armed Forces reported successes in the #Kremennaya - #Seversk direction.
▪️ The #Kupyansk direction is characterized by the effectiveness of our troops. The enemy has announced the evacuation of the population in the town.
▪️ In the #Ugledar direction, the situation remains difficult. Amid heavy fighting in the suburbs, the AFU are attempting counterattacks and publishing new videos of our (Russian) captives.

Despite ongoing strikes on UA's power generation facilities, power outage times are decreasing. Street lighting has even reappeared in some cities.
Does it appear that the Russian attacks are not effective? It's a bit more complicated than that.
🔹Power System Reserves:
The root of the current situation is the decline of #Ukraine's economy. Its energy system was created to supply 50 mil people with many energy-intensive plants. In 30 years, many disappeared and population shrank by at least 20% from 1991 to 2021.
The result was a unused capacity: for example, at the largest NPP, #Zaporozhye, only 1 of the 6 units was operating when the SMO began. By the autumn of 2022, it had only become larger due to plant closures and reduced traffic and a reduced utility load due to runaway population.
▪️In Oct, the RF Forces began striking power distribution facilities and knocking out autotransformers (ATs), with emergency shutdown schedules appearing across the country due to the accumulation of damage. But these were temporary difficulties: most PSs have a load substantially less than the nominal load, allowing it to be transferred from the knocked-out AT to the remaining ones.
▪️It takes a huge amount of high-precision ammunition to destroy all the transformers. Therefore, the PPs themselves have already become the target of the RF Forces in winter:
➖#Kharkov TPP-5, Burshtyn and Krivoy Rog TPP; damaged turbines with generators,
➖#Pridneprovska TPP; boilers damaged
➖#Kiev TPP-6 - transformer of the power unit damaged
➖#Dnieper HPP - the turbine hall was damaged
➖#Ladyzhinskaya TPP - belt conveyor and gas pipelines damaged.
But the facilities did not sustain any critical damage. The reason was the same overcapacity: for example, at Krivoy Rog TPP only 2 out of 10 turbine generators - #1 and #2 worked. Turbine #5 was scheduled to be put into operation in spring, but it was struck on 10 Feb.
🔹Measures by UA Energy Companies:
The authorities were forced to draw on reserves: the Energy Ministry reported that in Feb all 9 units at the 3 remaining NPPs were operational. Each generates 1,000 MW, and the reserves mitigated consumption constraints.
Starting up the units required a considerable amount of time, so the process could only be completed by 2023. There were no other options: due to the loss of Donetsk anthracite, there was a coal shortage, so the mass reactivation of TPP turbines made no sense.
It would seem that the abrupt cessation of emergency shutdowns indicates that the crisis in UA's energy system has been overcome. Except that everything seems to be happening exactly the opposite.
🔹What is the Vulnerability of UA's Energy System?
The NPPs always operate in the mode of constant power generation, and the commissioning of new units substantially increases the base level of generation. It is imperative to increase consumption to ensure full utilisation of the generators.
That is why the emergence of outdoor lighting in cities is not a sign of power system stability, but a forced measure to maintain its stability. To maintain frequency during peak loads, capacity manoeuvring is necessary, which is currently the bottleneck in UA's energy sector.
🔹What should be done?
On the one hand, it is possible to hit the general plant control points (GPU), which provide energy transit from NPPs to consumers. However, this requires a lot of ammunition.
A far more suitable option would be to knock out the turbine generators in the PPs, which provide the power maneuvering. Thus, when the electric locomotive traction is switched on, there will be nothing to compensate for consumption peaks: this will limit the use of trains and affect the logistics of the AFU. And morning and evening bursts of utility loads can even cause power unit shutdowns with cascading outages.
📌 Systematic strikes on TPP turbine halls will deprive UA's power system stability. It must continue!

💥 In Kupyansk direction, the active operations of the units and artillery, conducted by the 'Zapad' Group of Forces, have resulted in the neutralisation of the manpower and military hardware of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) near Novosyolovskoye (Lugansk People's Republic), Dvurechnaya, Krakhmalnoye, and Olshana (Kharkov region).

🇮🇷🇷🇺🇺🇦 On the development of military-technical cooperation between Russia and Iran
The British newspaper The Guardian has published an article about the Iranian government handing over at least 18 reconnaissance strike drones like Mohajer-6, Shahed-129 and Shahed-191 to the Russian Navy in November.
🔻Is this possible?
The level of cooperation between the countries in various fields is increasing every month:
➖ exchange of military technology (the assembly of the Geran-1/2 drones is done at Russian defence industry factories);
➖ sale of weapons and flight equipment to Iran (future transfer of a Su-35 squadron
➖ deepening economic cooperation.
Therefore, reports about possible delivery of Iranian strike drones are not groundless. However, The Guardian itself has been repeatedly accused of publishing fake news in pursuit of hype. Even now the article gives completely incorrect tactical and technical characteristics of the UAV.
The specific dates and number of drones indicated should be treated with a degree of scepticism. However, the type of UAV seems to have been mentioned correctly: the unsuccessful use of Mohajer-6 was already noted near Odessa last year.
🔻 What about other types of weapons?
Drones and their assembly methods are not the only things that Russian and Iranian representatives are working on. There is an ongoing exchange of experience and technology in the production of high-precision bombs and missiles for UAVs and attack aircraft. Agreements on personal safety equipment have also been extended.
In addition, an agreement was reached on the purchase of over 100,000 pieces of artillery and mortar ammunition from Iran. Iranian warehouses have large stocks of 122-mm shells for D-30 howitzers and BM-21 Grad MLRSs. There are active negotiations for the supply of 152mm rounds.
🔻Prospects.
With the conflict dragging on and the counter-offensive announced by the Ukrainian authorities in the spring and summer of this year, the Russian army needs to replenish its emaciated weapons stocks and also try to develop lagging areas of unmanned technologies and high-precision projectiles.
Mutually beneficial cooperation with Iran has allowed access to relatively inexpensive UAV and missile weapons development, which comes in handy because of restrictions on the procurement of high-tech components. And the Iranians, in turn, have been given access to some helicopter and surface-to-air missile technologies.
🔻 And specifically in the case of Iran ties must deepen. Despite Russia's seemingly friendly relations with China and India, it is only with Iran that cooperation has shifted from words to deeds and has enabled the Russian Armed Forces to expand combat capabilities in the conflict in Ukraine.
That said, the areas of arms and economic cooperation are not the only ones in which Iran and its allies can help.
In Iran, Iraq, Syria and elsewhere, pro-Iranian militias are active and eager to participate in the fight against the Collective West on Russia's side.
This is a great opportunity for them to get even with the US and gain combat experience. All they have to do is make a move.

According to our information, the RF armed forces carried out a missile attack on an oil refinery of the Kirovograd Oil Company near #Shestakovka village this morning (16 Feb).
A large fire broke out on the spot. Judging by the large cloud of thick black smoke, the munition hit the fuel tanks stored there. This indicates that the facility was operational at the time of the attack.

It was these small, semi-legal refineries that partly helped the Kiev authorities cushion the impact of the Russian strikes on oil depots in the spring and avoid severe fuel shortages with reduced deliveries of fuel and lubricants to Ukrainian formations.
