AZERBAIJANI OIL TROUGH TURKEY TO ISRAEL LIKELY TO CONTINUE
As President of Turkey, President Erdogan has maintained a self-image as a Caliph of the former Ottoman Turkish Empire. As such, he made an intervention in Libya, he invaded the northernmost regions of Syria, he escalated tensions among the Turkish Kurds, he has tried to dominate central Asian nations who speak languages belonging to the Turkish language family, and he still seems to nourish grudges that the Ottoman Turkish Empire developed against the Russian Empire in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Mr. Erdogan's policies are often duplicitous. He says one thing, but does another. When South Africa first started proceedings at the International Court of Justice, he announced Turkey would, too. Actually, Turkey did nothing. Likewise, Mr. Erdogan's effusive criticism of Israel did not stop Israeli trade with Turkey. Recently, however, he announced a list of products Turkey would no longer sell Israel. Then, on 2 May 2024 came the announcement that all Turkish trade with Israel was banned.
However, it is not clear when an official government decree announcing a cessation of trade will appear. Also, the news announcement had a big omission. No mention was made of whether the oil transit trade through Turkey between Azerbaijan and Israel would be covered. Was this considered a bilateral Azerbaijani-Israeli matter or was it considered a trilateral Azerbaijani-Israeli-Turkish matter?
The deafening silence would indicate that Mr. Erdogan intends to treat this as a bilateral issue, unless or until it becomes too political to ignore. There are several reasons for thinking so.
For one, although Turkey collects transit fees and port usage fees, Turkey neither produces the oil, nor consumes it. Whether transit fees make the oil a partially Turkish product is a matter for the courts to decide, and stopping the oil flow would generate many court cases.
A second reason is the Turkish government is not in the business of seeing business done in Turkey without taking a cut in the profits. Under Mr. Erdogan the Turkish government has not shown any signs of becoming an altruistic entity. The poverty of the Palestinians in comparison with the riches as the disposal of the world Zionist movement means that Mr. Erdogan and his government would simply rather not be bothered.
But, there is a third reason at play. Mr. Erdogan has indicated on several occasions, he would be open to turning Gaza into a Turkish protectorate occupied by Turkish troops. This would fit his dream of following in the steps of the Ottoman Turkish Empire. Neither NATO, nor the Israelis, nor the Palestinians expressed interest. This lack of interest in Mr. Erdogan's self-identity would also strongly suggest continued Turkish government disinterest in Palestinian affairs.
A fourth reason for thinking that the Azerbaijani-Israeli oil trade will continue can be seen in a statement made by the foreign minister of Israel. It goes:
โErdogan breaks tools and closes ports to export and import products to Israel. This is how a dictator behaves, trampling on the interests of the Turkish people and Turkish businessmen and ignoring international trade agreements. I have instructed the Director General of my Ministry to hold an immediate discussion in order to find alternatives to trade with Turkey.โ
No mention is made of the oil trade, which, if included, would, due to its overwhelming importance to Israel's ability to fight war, would have already caused an emergency meeting of Israel's War Cabinet. That is, unless matters had already been discussed and agreements reached on alternatives. Either way, what we see is not what we're getting. What we seem to be getting is hot air, useful for launching weather balloons, but not for dealing with genocide.

๐นIn the south of the #Enclave, the arrivals took place in the vicinity of the Al-Faruk and Nuh Mosques in Khan Yunis. In Abasan al-Kabir, an Israeli UAV attacked a crowd of citizens, resulting in some injuries. And in Rafah, three Palestinians were killed in an air raid.

๐นIn the #Bakhmut direction, Russian troops entrenched themselves in the Stupki-Golubovskiye-2 Nature Reserve in the area of โโthe Seversky Donets - Donbass Canal, and to the southeast of #Krasnoye they expanded the control zone in the adjacent forest belts.
๐นIn the #Avdeyevka direction, the RFAF liberated #Arkhangelskoye, which opens the way for an offensive in the direction of #Kalinovo. In the area of #Novopokrovskoye, Russian troops destroyed another M1A1SA Abrams tank, as well as an M2A2 ODS Bradley IFV.
