🔹Mobilisation remains the main topic of Ukrainian news. Zelensky's adviser Podolyak admitted the obvious, Ukraine is experiencing great difficulties in attracting people to the front. But the reason he gave for the mobilisation problems was surprising. He said that it is difficult to mobilise because the quality of life in Ukraine is not the same as in Europe. It is unclear what he meant exactly, but there are no Ukrainians willing to go to war among those who have left for Europe.

🔹The mass media in Ukraine have thrown in the news that people who have a quality of life like in Europe may not be drafted at all. Referring to unofficial information from sources either on Bankova or in the Verkhovna Rada, it is reported that people who receive a salary of at least 33.4 thousand hryvnias per month and pay tax to the budget will not be drafted. Quite predictably, this news caused an explosion of indignation in social networks. The original source of the throw-in is unknown, either BBC or Forbes, but the purpose to maintain a wave of popular anger is clearly traceable.

🔹Milovanov, former Minister of Economy, Agriculture and Trade, suggested that conscription should be conducted by lottery. He believes it would be fairer that way. It's hard to say where he got the idea, from Vietnam War films or the Hunger Games series. The lottery was indeed used for conscription in the US Army, including for the Vietnam War, as well as the Russian Empire back in the century before last. For Ukraine, this method is hardly appropriate now. It works when there are more persons liable for military service than are needed to replenish the army. And the Ukrainian authorities are now trying to collect everyone they can reach.

🔹The commander of the Aidar company, Dikiy, made an amusing statement. He urged people to join the army because if Ukraine loses the war, a military unit, unlike civilians, will be able to break the border and be interned in the EU. As an example, Dikiy cited 1947, when armed UPA units, he said, made their way through Poland and Czechoslovakia in an organised manner and then lived in the diaspora. However, Dikiy does not elaborate. In 1947, out of more than five hundred Banderovites from Poland and Czechoslovakia, less than a hundred broke through in groups and singly into the zone of American occupation. The rest were killed, captured wounded, simply captured, or surrendered to the authorities voluntarily.

🔹The news of the day was the beginning of consideration of the draft law on mobilisation in the Verkhovna Rada's Defence and Intelligence Committee. They have given themselves three days to discuss it. Already on 8 Jan the committee must decide on the further fate of the document: to put it to a vote of the Rada in the first reading or return it to the government for revision. On the first day, Zaluzhny and Umerov came to the committee meeting. The committee meetings are held in closed mode. However, MPs attending the meetings leak information about the discussions.

🔹However, in addition to the options of submitting for consideration or returning to the government, there is another option, preparation of alternative initiatives by deputies. One such initiative has already been registered in the Rada. It was introduced by a scandalously famous Odessa MP from the Poroshenko faction, Oleksiy Goncharenko. His document contains proposals to allow the military to demobilise after 18 (instead of 36) months of service, not to mobilise disabled people of the 3rd group (instead of only the 1st and 2nd groups), to grant deferment to those who receive the next level of education. The text itself is not yet available on the Rada website. But judging by these and other proposals, which have already been voiced by Goncharenko, it is unlikely that this document will help to replenish the army significantly. But for the purposes of the deputy himself, self-piracy , it is quite suitable.

🔹In the northern #Gaza Strip, Israeli forces were able to advance from the Al-Judaydah area towards the centre of Gaza City. According to Palestinian media, IDF units are near the Baptist Hospital. This is also confirmed by footage of Israelis demolishing a Hamas memorial in Palestine Square, which is close to the medical centre.

🔹In the south of the enclave, the IDF continue to fight in the dense urban area of Khan Younis. At the same time, Israeli forces resumed their offensive near the Ibn al-Nafis school, which, if advanced, would allow them to take the village of Al-Sureij.

🔹On #Israel's northern border, mutual firing continues. Hezbollah fighters routinely reported strikes on five Israeli settlements, including Kiryat Shmona, where one of the rockets hit a residential house. In turn, the IDF hit ten targets in southern #Lebanon.

🔹The #Israel - #Syria border was also troubled: in response to the launching of four munitions from #Syria at the Golan Heights, the Israeli forces launched a Lynx MLRS attack on #Damascus province. In addition, the Jordanian Air Force targeted drug trafficking warehouses and drug laboratories in the Syrian towns of Bakka and Dibina and southeast of Al-Suwayda.
