EU companies suffer €100bn hit from leaving Russia
Direct losses of European companies associated with leaving Russia amounted to at least €100 billion since the beginning of the Ukrainian conflict, the Financial Times reported.
Oil and gas companies have suffered the greatest losses. Firms from the UK, Germany and France have lost the most money.
A review of 600 European groups' annual reports and 2023 financial statements shows that 176 companies experienced asset impairments, exchange rate related charges and other non-recurring costs due to the sale, closure or downsizing of the Russian segment of their business.
Which industries suffered the most:
📍 Oil & gas – BP, Shell and TotalEnergies alone suffered €40.6 billion in losses;
📍 Financial sector (including banks, insurance and investment firms) – €17.5 billion;
📍 Utilities – €14.7 billion;

At the talks in Saudi Arabia, not all countries agreed with Ukrainian side's peace formula.
The head of Zelensky's office, Andrey Yermak, said this on air during a telethon.

The Saudi-organized Ukraine "peace talks" accomplished nothing, as predicted. That hasn't stopped the Wall Street Journal from seeing things — claiming that Kiev has backtracked on its hardline "peace formula" (a set of 10 demands amounting to Russia's unconditional surrender). Those "European diplomats" who sourced this claim were either engaging in wishful thinking or propaganda.
Either way, no matter — Zelensky's top aide, the odious Podolyak, fired off a couple tweets today insisting that there has been no change, there can be "no compromise," Ukraine is not abandoning its "platform." But then he went a step further, and claimed that Russia would use any ceasefire to rearm and wait for "key leaders" in the West to leave before restarting the war. In other words, exactly what Kiev and its sponsors did with Minsk 1 & 2, per repeated statements from Angela Merkel, Francois Hollande, and Pyotr Poroshenko.
KIev's entire argument at this point is "gibs moar weaponz". Except the West is running out of them, almost as fast as Zelensky's regime is running out of "meat."

🇳🇪 Nigerien coup leaders say 2 African countries preparing for military intervention
"Despite the disapproval of the Nigerien people and the peoples of ECOWAS countries, the plan of this war [military intervention in Niger] has been already devised … A preliminary transfer of forces to participate in it has started in two Central African countries," the CNSP said in a statement quoted by the Nigerien Press Agency.
On July 26, Niger's presidential guard ousted and detained President Mohamed Bazoum. The guard's commander, Gen. Abdourahmane Tchiani, proclaimed himself the president of the caretaker CNSP-led government.

Updates on the Niger situation
On Sunday, the ultimatum Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) gave Niger had expired.
Here's what's happened since then:
▪️ Italy has reduced its military contingent in Niger, bringing back home 65 soldiers.
▪️ Nigeria's Senate has urged the ECOWAS to seek diplomatic solutions to the coup.
▪️ Thousands of Nigeriens defied the ECOWAS deadline for the return to power of the ousted president to rally in support of the rebel military in the national capital of Niamey.
▪️ The militaries of the ECOWAS need more time to prepare for military intervention in Niger against the background of the military takeover in the country, The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday, citing a senior commander from one of the ECOWAS countries.
▪️ The rebels announced the closure of airspace in Niger due to the threat of military intervention. The rebels promised that any attempted invasion would receive a "vigorous and immediate response."
▪️ Against this backdrop, France suspended aid to Burkina Faso, which had supported the Niger rebels.
▪️ There were also reports that the rebels had approached the Wagner Group for help, and that Wagner would launch their presence in Niamey. But there is no confirmation yet.

Frantz Fanon’s “The Wretched of the Earth” remains a vital guide both to the tenacity of white supremacy in the West and to the moral Android intellectual failures of the Global South élites.
The liberation of a nation and the restoration of that nation to the people will, according to Fanon, always involve violence. In Fanon’s view, the Western bourgeoisie was “fundamentally racist” and its “bourgeois ideology” of equality and dignity was merely a cover for capitalist-imperialist rapacity. European imperialists had, he writes , “behaved like real war criminals in the underdeveloped world” for centuries, using “deportation, massacres, forced labor, and slavery” to accumulate wealth. Among their “most heinous” crimes were the rupturing of the Black man’s identity, the destruction of his culture and community, and the poisoning of his inner life with a sense of inferiority. European thought, Fanon wrote, was marked by “a permanent dialogue with itself, an increasingly obnoxious narcissism.”
He further wrote that "The national bourgeoisie discovers its historical mission as intermediary. As we have seen, its vocation is not to transform the nation but prosaically serve as a conveyor belt for capitalism, forced to camouflage itself behind the mask of neocolonialism. The national bourgeoisie, with no misgivings and with great pride, revels in the role of agent in its dealings with the Western bourgeoisie".
At the same time, Fanon urged the colonized to “stop accusing” their white masters, and to do what the latter had so conspicuously failed to do, to start a “new history of man” that advanced “universalizing values.” In his view, anti-colonial nationalism was only the first step toward a new radical humanism “for Europe, for ourselves and for humanity.”
We can accept as true that “The rulers are the reflection of the intelligentsia of a society". And, as Nelson Mandela once stated, “Government violence can do only one thing and that is to breed counterviolence”. But violence seems everywhere these days and results from governmental and societal failure to acknowledge and address social, economic, political, or other national aspirations seems inescapable. A first step toward a paradigm shift, thus, would be to see individual state institutions as nothing more than single elements of a whole and not the state in and of itself. Thus, for each segment of "frozen minds" with inferiority complex symptoms in colonized intelligentsia (sic), there is proportional representation in the ruling class of that colonial or post-colonial territory. This, in turn, proving a famous Urdu proverb "jaisi qaum (intelligentsia) waisay hukmaran", which in English may be translated as “The rulers are the reflection of the intelligentsia of a society". A poor country may, therefore, be cured by removing the hypocrisy and selfishness of the predatory intelligentsia, which is keeping it poor and degraded. Salvation can only come in the transformation of a nation's intelligentsia into one which is selfless in comparison with what existed before hand.

🗓 During the night, combined assault groups of the 10th AC's 116th and 118th Mechanized Brigades attacked the #Rabotino - #Verbovoye line. The attack involved only infantry units without armoured vehicles.
▪️ The attack was repulsed, but in the morning the AFU resumed the offensive with the support of artillery and forces of the 15th Brigade of the Ukrainian National Guard. At one point they even managed to occupy the northern outskirts of #Rabotino, but in the end our fighters pushed the AFU back. The clashes continue.
🔹 Positional fighting also began in the vicinity of #Belogorye, where the previous day the Ukrainian command transferred one platoon from #Gulyaypole. Activation in this area may indicate possible attempts of strikes in this direction.
▪️ At the same time in the rear, in the area of #Tavriyskoye the formation of a strike group is going on. Formations of the AFU's 65th Mechanized and 128th Separate Mountain Assault Brigades with armoured vehicles have arrived there. 🗓 Because of the distraction to other directions, the situation along the #Dnieper has fallen out of public view. For several months, the AFU continued to fire along the left bank, covering the actions of SRGs on boats.
🪂 However, after the replacement of the Airborne Forces with new formations, the AFU intensified their attacks on Russian positions. The goal in this case is simple, to take advantage of the inexperience and ignorance of those who arrived to create a bridgehead on the left bank.
🔹At night, 7 Ukrainian boats landed up to seven SRGs of 6-7 men after setting up a smoke screen west of Cossack Camps. The enemy groups took advantage of the change in the frontline and struck from the flank, reaching a populated area on the banks of the #Dnieper.
▪️ The effect of surprise and the delayed reaction allowed the AFU to land and advance unhindered towards the Camps, after which the Russian troops had already pushed them back. According to colleagues from this direction, the AFU withdrew to the right bank.
🔹And in recent days, this is not the only area where the enemy is trying to gain a foothold. According to Two Majors, small arms battles have also been noted near the railway bridge near #Peschanovka, where the AFU has achieved a small tactical success.

🇫🇷🌍 An open letter about the collapse of Paris in Africa was written to Macron by 94 French senators.
"Today Niger, yesterday Mali, CAR, Burkina Faso rejected France, French forces, French enterprises," the Le Figaro newspaper quoted the letter, naming Ivory Coast, Senegal, Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco among those that have become problematic for France.
After the failure of the French military intervention in 2014, the Wagner Group came to Africa. Specifically to those countries whose leaders unite the population against "the former colonial power," the letter said.
"The French Africa of yesterday is being replaced by a military Russian Africa, an economic Chinese Africa, and a diplomatic American Africa. Africa, a friendly continent, no longer understands France and is increasingly challenging its role and presence," the French senators wrote.

🗓 Yesterday, towards evening, combined assault groups of the AFU's 35th and 36th Separate Marines Brigades, supported by the 1st Separate Tank Brigade and brigade-artillery group of the 72nd Mechanized Brigade, began the assault on #Urozhaynoye from the north and northeast.
▪️ By midnight, the Ukrainian formations managed to gain a foothold on the northern outskirts of the village, but as a result of a counterattack by Russian troops, the AFU retreated to the initial lines.
⛑ The evacuation of the wounded and killed in the battle was carried out by the evacuation groups of the AFU's 128th Territorial Defence Brigade under the cover of artillery and electronic warfare units.
❗️However, the attacks will resume in the near future. Three assault units of the 88th Battalion of the 35th Marines Brigade have been moved to a landing northwest of #Staromayorskoye.
📌 At the moment, the enemy's efforts are concentrated on #Urozhaynoye. The village itself has already suffered the fate of neighbouring #Staromayorskoye, almost razed to the ground. 🔹 Near #Kupyansk, the servicemen of the RF Armed Forces grouping "West" continue the positional offensive. As a result of the attack on the section Liman 1st - #Pervomayskoye, Russian fighters knocked out the formations of the AFU's 14th Mechanized Brigade from several strongholds.
▪️ At the moment, the Russian army has taken important positions near the landings south of #Olshana and #Pervomayskoye. The line of control runs along the forest belts adjacent to the settlements.
▪️ At the same time, to the south, scouts of the 1st Tank Army of the RF Armed Forces detected an AFU APC in the village of #Kislovka, southeast of #Kupyansk, and hit it with an antitank complex.
