π― The future of software engineering is SRE
https://swizec.com/blog/the-future-of-software-engineering-is-sre/
1οΈβ£ Writing a demo is easy - running a service is hard
Anyone can build POC, keeping a service reliable over time is the real engineering
2οΈβ£Software is hired for reliability, not impressiveness
You don't care how iCloud works, you just want your photos to magically
3οΈβ£ The first 90% is easy - the next 190% is hard
Getting a demo working is straightforward. Handling uptime, scaling, failure recovery, dependencies, securityβ¦
4οΈβ£ Service quality questions are the real engineering metrics
- How do we recover from failure?
- What happens when upstream breaks?
- Can we update without outages?
5οΈβ£ SRE means thinking long term
Software engineering is not just writing code, itβs keeping systems alive in the real world with messy data, users, timezones, and unexpected events

β Fixing a Lost Chess Piece with Epoxy
My daughter took chess set to school. BTW This chess has survived relocation Chelyabinsk -> Saint Petersburg -> Spain. So it was quite sentimental piece of plastic. So, I decided to try fixing it myself.
1οΈβ£ Made a template using epoxy
2οΈβ£ Covered the original pawn with oil and pressed it into the epoxy template
3οΈβ£ Waited until the template hardened
4οΈβ£ Oiled the template and put epoxy inside + added a small magnet
5οΈβ£ Polished and covered it with varnish
Honestly, I expected the result to look terrible. Instead it was just bad, bad with enough functionality.
Also reminder: infrastructure engineers secretly enjoy building random physical things too π

π€microbit
I've just found quite promising project for kids: https://microbit.org/
There is gui, javascript & python to have some fun with kids. They can start just from GUI and can program it. however initializating is a bit tricky
