🔤Tainan’s water network served as the basis for the city’s marine and fishing industry since the 17th century, but the 1980s saw the city depart from this historic urban approach. China-Town Mall was built on top of the old harbour next to the Tainan Canal in 1983.

The China-Town mall has been removed and meticulously recycled, making the project an innovative example of the circular economy. The foundations of the former mall stick out of the park and the lagoon like a contemporary Roman Forum, offering a visual marker of the historical decision to close a port in favour of a mall. #refurbishment

The pool has been carefully planned to be a perfect gathering spot for all seasons: the water level will rise and fall in response to the rainy and dry seasons, and in hot weather mist sprayers will reduce the local temperature to provide welcome relief to visitors, reducing the use of air conditioning in the summer months.

🔤The opera house features a series of hourglass wells in its facade, which are filled with gridded glazing to frame views of the city from terraces within. Inside, cavernous hollows based on bodily orifices contain stairwells, lobbies and auditoria. Bright white walls are offset by areas of bright red carpeting and paintwork.

"I aimed to create the architecture of this opera house in such a way that the inside and outside are continuous in a like manner to how bodies are connected to nature through organs such as the mouth, nose, and ears," explained Toyo Ito.

🔤"The first time I visited this property and took in the desert and the diaphanous, clear water running along a horizontal line in the background, I felt the enormous drive of water under a scorching sun. This piece of land, located in the middle of a coastline dotted with “All Inclusives,” would have to be transformed into a box that contained its own sea –practically its own air– given the happy circumstance that the universe had created a desert joined to the sea along a horizontal line. It was the purest, most minimalist landscape a horizon could have drawn. On either side, this dreamlike scenery collided with what humans consider to be aesthetic and build and baptize as architecture."

Mar Adentro is a kind of Medina that opens out onto the sea. Each floating volume contains interiors that form, in turn, independent universes. Each room visually contains a piece of the sea; no one can resist gazing out at it.

🔤After years of refusing to design a building in Las Vegas, Gehry agreed to design the cleveland clinic Lou Ruvo center after forming a bond with founder Larry Ruvo, a Las Vegas liquor distributor who was compelled to start a neurological research facility after watching his father, Lou, struggle with alzheimer’s.

The ensemble will include concrete buildings of research laboratories and hospital wards connected by glazed intermediate rooms. This juxtaposition should embody the dual essence of brain activity - both ordered and chaotic.

🔤Columns dominate the library in Taipei, a single-story structure designed in tandem with an eight-story building directly behind it. The taller building holds teaching facilities and forms the fourth side of an enclosed courtyard whose centerpiece is the jewel-like library.

Supporting the vertical load, the reinforced-concrete columns are arranged using a double-spiral algorithm. “Usually columns are organized with an orthogonal grid, but here we wanted a more natural way,” explains Ito.

So the column plan propagates from three centers in the ground plane. Two sets of curved lines extend outward in opposite directions, as if tracing the petals of a lotus flower.

Ito placed columns at their cross points. As the lines spin outward, the distance between intersections grows, and the concentration of columns disperses, creating pockets of open space reminiscent of clearings in a forest.
