🔤Influenced by the Indian stepwells of Rajasthan, formed from multitudes of stone staircases reaching down into the ground, the studio became interested in the mesmerizing visual effect of the repeating steps, flights and landings.

To create the continuous geometric pattern of the stepwell, the object had to be self-supporting – a discreet structural solution was required, which did not need additional columns and beams. This was resolved by inserting a steel spine between each pair of staircases, creating a natural division between ‘up’ and ‘down’.

The raw welded steel of this structure is exposed to give the object clarity and integrity, and the underside of the staircases is clad in a deep copper-toned metal, setting them apart from the surrounding architecture.

Forming a major free public attraction at the heart of this new district, Vessel represents an intention to create an extraordinary new kind of public legacy for New York.

🔤Located at Taipei’s Shilin Night Market marked by its vibrant street culture, Taipei Performing Arts Center is architecture in limbo: specific yet flexible, undisrupted yet public, iconic without being conceived as such. The spherical 800-seat Globe Playhouse, with an inner and an outer shell, resembles a planet docking against the cube.

"When we first visited Taipei for the competition, we felt it was a city with an appetite for experiment," explained OMA's founder and project lead Rem Koolhaas. "This building is a response to that discovery."

The general public—with or without a ticket—is invited into the theater through a Public Loop, which runs through the theater’s infrastructure and spaces of production that are typically hidden. Portal windows along the Public Loop (google street) allow visitors to look at the performances inside and technical spaces in between the theaters.

🔤At the heart of the project is the public plaza and cultural centre which is designed to host theatre, art exhibitions and fashion shows. Elevated and cantilevered on two pillars, the centre recalls the tradition of raised, open Chinese theatres where actors performed to those inside as well as those standing outside.

The #kinetic façade creates a link between the inside and out and is composed of individual metal ‘tassels’ arranged on three tracks. When the tracks rotate around the perimeter, the tassels overlap to produce different levels of opacity and varied apertures.

Each tassel is clad with coloured stainless #steel sleeves. Inspired by patterns of Chinese weaving, ropes and knots, the studio worked with local craftsman to develop embossed textures for the sleeves. The textures vary in scale and become more diffuse as the tubes rise, reducing the sense of weight.

🔤Metro stations, like airports, are often the first buildings that people experience when arriving in a city and they therefore have an important symbolic role as urban gateways.

The station is announced externally by two highly sculptural roof elements, which overlap to dynamic visual effect and appear to hover weightlessly above the heavy concrete base. A 40-metre-diameter disc, clad in stainless steel, shelters the ticket hall and marks the station entrance, while a 130-metre-long, blade-like form, sheathed in titanium, covers the platforms, its reflective soffit constantly animated with the reflections of passengers and passing trains.

The station is used by very large numbers of people at peak times and so creating clear sight lines and a strong sense of orientation were fundamental to its design. At ground level, the concourse is open, with views on one side to the street, and on the other side to a lush tropical garden created.

🔤Kingway Beer has been the collective memory of Shenzheners, especially among the pioneers and migrants from all over China to pursue their dreams in this frontier city of China’s reform and opening-up. As Shenzhen proceeds with its radical urban development, a substantial part of Kingway Brewery was demolished, marking the city’s memories of past endeavors, glories, and entrepreneurial pioneering spirit.

On the top of the aeration tank the casted aluminum structure with the shimmering lighting is reminiscent of the rising golden bubbles of a beer.

"This project is a rare example of industrial heritage being celebrated and preserved by converting it into a public space that serves the local community. The design deftly handles the contrast between new and old elements and, despite the huge site, the architects have managed to create intimate pockets of space within it." – judjes comments of Dezeen awards.

Project was selected by #Dezeen as the project of the year in heritage category in 2023. #award
