*️⃣Munich Olympic Stadium

Architect #Behnisch and #FreiOtto
City #Munich
Country #Germany #EU

🔤Intended to present a new face for post-war Germany, the stadium—strikingly Modernist in character—was meant to stand in harmony with its surroundings. Despite these modest intentions, however, controversy surrounded the project from its outset, which centered on skyrocketing costs, the erosion of local heritage, and the grim specter of the country’s own recent past.

Seeking to avoid the inherent monumentality of individual structures, their proposal was to gather the various venues and accessory functions close enough together to be united by a common structural element. The concept for the stadium itself was derived from the ‘earth stadiums’ commonly built in Eastern Europe since the end of the First World War. It was as much a symbolic choice as a practical one, as a stadium set into the earth would not present visitors with an imposing edifice, but blend more subtly into the ideal Bavarian landscape being created on the rest of the site. #context

*️⃣Liège-Guillemins Railway Station

Architect #Calatrava #SantiagoCalatrava
City #Liege
Country #Belgium #EU

🔤Liege in the heart of the high-speed network in northern Europe, the railway company wanted the new station to offer an aesthetic that was a reference for the city. The Calatrava project, monumental, expressive, airy and transparent, fulfilled these requirements widely.

Calatrava designed a building, 200m wide, without facades, relying on the roof as a refuge and its identity. The project was marked by transparency and dialogue between two neighborhoods, one residential and the other urban, building bridges between them, separated in the past by railways.

The characteristic transparency of the station is achieved through the monumental vault constructed of glass and steel, which allows a feeling of interpenetration between the station and the city.

*️⃣Louvre Abu Dhabi

Architect #Nouvel #JeanNouvel #AJN
City #AbuDhabi
Country #UAE #ME

🔤Jean Nouvel sought inspiration for the concept of Louvre Abu Dhabi in traditional Arabic architectural culture. Taking a contextual approach to the site, Nouvel designed Louvre Abu Dhabi as a ‘museum city’ in the sea. Its contrasting series of white buildings take inspiration from the medina and low-lying Arab settlements. #context

The dome consists of eight different layers: four outer layers clad in stainless steel and four inner layers clad in aluminium separated by a steel frame five metres high.

The dome is supported by only four permanent piers, each 110 metres apart. These are hidden within the museum buildings to give the impression that the dome is floating.

*️⃣Vessel

Architect #Heatherwick #ThomasHeatherwick
City #NewYork
Country #USA #NA

🔤Influenced by the Indian stepwells of Rajasthan, formed from multitudes of stone staircases reaching down into the ground, the studio became interested in the mesmerizing visual effect of the repeating steps, flights and landings.

To create the continuous geometric pattern of the stepwell, the object had to be self-supporting – a discreet structural solution was required, which did not need additional columns and beams. This was resolved by inserting a steel spine between each pair of staircases, creating a natural division between ‘up’ and ‘down’.

The raw welded steel of this structure is exposed to give the object clarity and integrity, and the underside of the staircases is clad in a deep copper-toned metal, setting them apart from the surrounding architecture.

Forming a major free public attraction at the heart of this new district, Vessel represents an intention to create an extraordinary new kind of public legacy for New York.

*️⃣Taipei Performing Arts Center

Architect #Koolhaas #RemKoolhaas #OMA
City #Taipei
Country #Taiwan #AP

🔤Located at Taipei’s Shilin Night Market marked by its vibrant street culture, Taipei Performing Arts Center is architecture in limbo: specific yet flexible, undisrupted yet public, iconic without being conceived as such. The spherical 800-seat Globe Playhouse, with an inner and an outer shell, resembles a planet docking against the cube.

"When we first visited Taipei for the competition, we felt it was a city with an appetite for experiment," explained OMA's founder and project lead Rem Koolhaas. "This building is a response to that discovery."

The general public—with or without a ticket—is invited into the theater through a Public Loop, which runs through the theater’s infrastructure and spaces of production that are typically hidden. Portal windows along the Public Loop (google street) allow visitors to look at the performances inside and technical spaces in between the theaters.
