*️⃣Guggenheim Museum Bilbao

Architect #FrankGehry #Gehry
City #Bilbao
Country #Spain #EU

🔤Although the metallic form of the exterior looks almost floral from above, from the ground the building more closely resembles a boat , evoking the past industrial life of the port of Bilbao. Constructed of titanium, limestone, and glass, the seemingly random curves of the exterior are designed to catch the light and react to the sun and the weather.

Fixing clips make a shallow central dent in each of the .38mm titanium tiles, making the surface appear to ripple in the changing light and giving an extraordinary iridescence to the overall composition.

Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum Bilbao not only changed the way that architects and people think about museums, but also boosted Bilbao's economy with its astounding success. In fact, the phenomenon of a city’s transformation following the construction of a significant piece of architecture is now referred to as the “Bilbao Effect".

*️⃣French communist party headquarters

Architect #OscarNiemeyer #Niemeyer
City #Paris
Country #France #EU

🔤During the summer of 1965, an exhibition centered on Niemeyer’s projects in Brasilia at the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris drew record breaking crowds as well as attention from French architects and politicians alike. The exhibition came at an opportune time as, only a year prior, the Brazilian government had been overthrown by a right-wing military dictatorship.

As a noted communist and outspoken political leftist, Niemeyer fled to France and established an office on the Champs-Elysées in Paris. He began work on a series of projects across Europe during this self-imposed exile.

Soon after, the French Communist Party (CPF) commissioned Niemeyer to design the party’s new headquarters. “Our shared views and political struggle were far more important than architecture,” Niemeyer wrote. “And we became good friends.”

"During this phase, my fourth, the prevailing idea was to manifest not only the plastic freedom of my architecture but also the advancements in engineering in Brazil,” said Niemeyer. “In the French Communist Party Headquarters, I demonstrated the importance of maintaining harmony between volumes and spaces on the exterior, which explains why the great workers’ hall is located underground.”

*️⃣ DZ Bank

Architect #FrankGehry #Gehry
City #Berlin
Country #Germany #EU

🔤A high-volume foyer immediately inside the main entry offers a view into the building’s large interior atrium, which features a curving glass ceiling and a curving glass floor. Office spaces are organized around the atrium, and are oriented inward to take advantage of the natural light that floods through the glass ceiling.

The building’s primary conference hall is located within a highly sculptural shell in the center of the glass floor of the atrium. Clad in stainless steel on the exterior and wood on the interior, the conference room is the physical and spiritual heart of the project.

*️⃣Pan Pacific Orchard Hotel

Architect #WOHA
Country #Singapore #AP

🔤Each terrace has a different theme – beach, garden and cloud – and is wrapped on two sides by guest rooms in six-storey blocks.

"Instead of one monolithic tower, we have three stacks of boutique-scale hotels that come together within one building, separated by sky terraces," WOHA director Hong Wei told Dezeen.

Together with the landscaping on the terraces, the building replaces 200% of its site area with greenery. The selection of greenery echoes the theme of each stratum, bringing nature and biodiversity back to the city. #greenery

Mirror roofs above the terraces were designed to reflect the verdant outdoor spaces to make them viewable from the street while adding a cooling effect, according to WOHA.

Project was selected by #CTBUH as the best skyscraper of the year 2024. #award

*️⃣Morpheus Hotel

Architect #ZahaHadid #Hadid #ZHA
City #Macau
Country #China #AP

🔤Informed by the fluid forms within China’s rich traditions of jade carving, the Morpheus’ design combines dramatic public spaces and generous guest rooms with innovative engineering and formal cohesion.

The design resolves the hotel’s many complex programmes within a single cohesive envelope. Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) was commissioned to build the hotel in 2012. At that time, foundations were already in place of a condominium tower that did not progress.

The building’s #steel exoskeleton optimizes the interiors by creating spaces that are uninterrupted by supporting walls or columns.

Viviana Muscettola, ZHA's project director explains, "Morpheus combines its optimal arrangement with structural integrity and sculptural form. The design is intriguing as it makes no reference to traditional architectural typologies.

Project was selected by #Archdaily as the building of the year in hospitality category in 2019. #award
