*️⃣Castelar Building Renovation

Architect #RafaelDeLaHoz #LaHoz #Hoz
City #Madrid
Country #Spain #EU

🔤Highly original were the two matte glass walls covering the main volume. The result is threefold: a reverse-greenhouse effect that provides a solution to problems caused by direct sunlight on the curtain walls, an accentuation of the slight transparency of the tower, and an augmented perception of a weightless mass.

Also unusually in this type of buildings, the vertical communications nucleus is not located in its normal position. Rather it is placed outside the building where it forms a davit for the suspension of the main volume. The floors are therefore freed of pillars and services, and the main volume takes on the appearance of a prism of glass floating in space over its base. #cantilever

*️⃣Lippo Center

Architect #PaulRudolph
Country #HongKong #AP

🔤The Lippo Centre is a double office tower on Hong Kong Island, whose unusual blue curtain wall facades evoke koala bears climbing a tree.

The project envisaged the two towers connected by a series of walkways in height, but one of the original owners opposed the project because it reminded him of his former factories in Indonesia.

Architect #JunyaIshigami #Ishigami
City #Ube close to #Kitakyushu
Country #Japan #AP

🔤"I was asked to design a building as “heavy” as possible". "I want an architecture whose heaviness would increase with time,” he said. “It cannot be artificially smooth but rather something with the roughness of nature. Authentic cuisines require such a place.” He also told me that “it has to look as if it has been there and will continue to be there for the longest time.”

The structure comprises a maze of cavernous spaces separated by arched openings and stalagmite-like columns, all crafted from concrete that is covered in mud. It was constructed by pouring concrete into holes dug in the ground, which acted as a textured mould.

In Ishigami's original design, the mud was due to be washed off the concrete after the site was fully excavated. However, after seeing the earth on the structure, he decided to leave it as a surface covering. To prevent the mud from washing off, it was "hardened using a Japanese method of repairing earthen walls", Ishigami told Dezeen.

*️⃣Ilot Queyries

Architect #MVRDV
City #Bordeaux
Country #France #EU

🔤On all sides, the façades facing the street are lower than those facing the central courtyard. In accordance with the rules developed in the Bastide-Niel masterplan, the roof slopes vary between 14 degrees and 45 degrees depending on their relation to the sun.

Ilot Queyries thus adopts the same approach as the Bastide-Niel masterplan: the building fills the site to its boundaries, lending an intimate feeling to the streetscape, while the roofs are arranged into carefully calibrated slopes to provide maximum ventilation, daylight, and sun to the building itself and to its neighbours.

“The building creates close and intimate streets without ugly parked cars thanks to its ample car parking. At the same time every apartment is provided a balcony or loggia, while the green park space becomes a wonderful community amenity.” says MVRDV founding partner Winy Maas.

Project was selected by #Archdaily as the best building in residential category in 2022. #award

*️⃣Plaza of Kanagawa Institute of Technology

Architect #JunyaIshigami #Ishigami
City #Atsugi close to #Yokohama
Country #Japan #AP

🔤The 59 ceiling openings create a playful light filtering effect mimicking the way the sun shines through the clouds on a dim day. Accordingly, the space transforms depending on the time and weather. Rainy days offer an impressive scenery as the rain-flow comes in through the unglazed openings forming water pillars and adding an element of sound to the experience.
“Thus the natural changes perceived by the body become the architectural scenery”.

Regarding the material use, the ground is covered with water permeable asphalt, which is treated with high pressure cleaning to completely remove the oil before painting. The rainwater can then be instantly absorbed when it infiltrates and flows through the plaza building, keeping the room dry so that it would not feel unpleasant if users were to sit.
“The process of passing time becomes the subject”.

#quote@simoderna

A deep connection between people and the built nature is encouraged through the plaza. Sitting on the floor is suggested though the design to maintain a direct link between the users and the architecturally developed environment.

The ground becomes a comfortable hill-like slope, like a huge bed, allowing the body and environment to become merged into one scenery. When experienced all together, the slope, light, raindrop sounds and the built horizon make an emblematic place on campus. A space that offers a raw natural comfort by guiding through specific curated experiences that is “outside-ness”.
