*️⃣Salmon eye / Iris

Architect #Kvorning Design
City #Rosendal close to #Bergen
Country #Norway #EU

🔤True to its nature, Salmon Eye curves for its ellipsoid design, bathed in 9,250 stainless steel shaped like scales to imitate the appearance and color of fish.

The exterior design of Salmon Eye mimics the shiny, silvery skin of salmon and the shape takes after the fish’s eye – hence the name.

It glistens brightly in the Hardangerfjord, one of Norway’s most stunning fjords, and can be seen from miles away – even from an airplane landing at the nearby airport.

*️⃣Unite d' Habitation

Architect #LeCorbusier #Corbusier
City #Marseille
Country #France #EU

🔤Also, it is apparent that Le Corbusier’s mechanized influences from other industries have not been lost in design. As massive as the Unite d’Habitation is, it begins to resemble the steamship that Corbusier is so intrigued with.

The massive volume appears to be floating, the ribbon windows resemble the cabin windows running along the hull, while the roof garden/terrace and sculptural ventilation stacks appear as the top deck and the smoke stacks.

After World War II, the need for housing was at an unprecedented high. The Unite d’Habitation in Marseille, France was the first large scale project for the famed architect, Le Corbusier. In 1947, Europe was still feeling the effects of the Second World War, when Le Corbusier was commissioned to design a multi-family residential housing project for the people of Marseille that were dislocated after the bombings on France.

*️⃣Castelar Building Renovation

Architect #RafaelDeLaHoz #LaHoz #Hoz
City #Madrid
Country #Spain #EU

🔤Highly original were the two matte glass walls covering the main volume. The result is threefold: a reverse-greenhouse effect that provides a solution to problems caused by direct sunlight on the curtain walls, an accentuation of the slight transparency of the tower, and an augmented perception of a weightless mass.

Also unusually in this type of buildings, the vertical communications nucleus is not located in its normal position. Rather it is placed outside the building where it forms a davit for the suspension of the main volume. The floors are therefore freed of pillars and services, and the main volume takes on the appearance of a prism of glass floating in space over its base. #cantilever

*️⃣Lippo Center

Architect #PaulRudolph
Country #HongKong #AP

🔤The Lippo Centre is a double office tower on Hong Kong Island, whose unusual blue curtain wall facades evoke koala bears climbing a tree.

The project envisaged the two towers connected by a series of walkways in height, but one of the original owners opposed the project because it reminded him of his former factories in Indonesia.

*️⃣Maison owl

Architect #JunyaIshigami #Ishigami
City #Ube close to #Kitakyushu
Country #Japan #AP

🔤"I was asked to design a building as “heavy” as possible". "I want an architecture whose heaviness would increase with time,” he said. “It cannot be artificially smooth but rather something with the roughness of nature. Authentic cuisines require such a place.” He also told me that “it has to look as if it has been there and will continue to be there for the longest time.”

The structure comprises a maze of cavernous spaces separated by arched openings and stalagmite-like columns, all crafted from concrete that is covered in mud. It was constructed by pouring concrete into holes dug in the ground, which acted as a textured mould.

In Ishigami's original design, the mud was due to be washed off the concrete after the site was fully excavated. However, after seeing the earth on the structure, he decided to leave it as a surface covering. To prevent the mud from washing off, it was "hardened using a Japanese method of repairing earthen walls", Ishigami told Dezeen.

Project was selected by #Archdaily as building of the year in hospitality category in 2023. #award
