*️⃣Basilica Santuario Madonna delle Lacrime

Architect #ANPAR or #Andrault #MichelAndrault and #Parat #PierreParat
City #Syracuse
Country #Italy #EU

🔤In the architects' intention, the shape is meant to symbolize the elevation of humanity towards God. Nonetheless, in time, the morphology of the building was infused with additional religious meaning, being read as a lighthouse guiding devotees towards divinity, or a teardrop, in connection to the sacred event that led to the erection of the church.

Pierre Parat would say many years later:
"I like the architecture that reveals itself, that is honest, I don't like gimmicks and ornament".

The concrete structure reaches a height of 94,3m and a statue reproducing the image of the crying effigy sits at the top of the Sanctuary. The dome's structure is made of an array of 22 #rawconcrete ribs horizontally connected through eight pre-tensed rings.

Vertical window strips alternate the structure's rhythm, giving the impression of light beams coming down towards the sitting area of the Sanctuary.

*️⃣CaixaForum

Architect #HerzogdeMeuron #HdM #Herzog #Meuron
City #Madrid
Country #Spain #EU

🔤 CaixaForum is conceived as an urban magnet attracting not only art-lovers but all people of Madrid and from outside. The attraction will not only be CaixaForum’s cultural program, but also the building itself, insofar that its heavy mass, is detached from the ground in apparent defiance of the laws of gravity and, in a real sense, draws the visitors inside. #cantilever

The classified brick walls of the former power station are reminiscences of the early industrial age in Madrid. The only material of the old power station that we wanted to save was the classified brick shell. This opened a completely novel and spectacular perspective. The removal of the base of the building left a covered plaza under the brick shell, which now appears to float above the street level. This sheltered space under the CaixaForum offers shade to visitors. #heritage@simoderna

*️⃣ Coffee & Tree + Canopy

Architect #SelgasCano
City #Rizhao
Country #China #AP

🔤Wiggling through a phalanx of mid-rise housing blocks, a covered walkway and attached café serve as a colorful antidote to the regimented architecture all around it.

The project goal was to enliven the housing blocks and create visual connections. The contrast to the red-brick, residential monoliths could not be starker.

A high-energy jolt of architectural exuberance, the walkway and café projects entice residents to come and relax. Bisecting the property, they serve as common ground for kids, parents, and seniors. They’re both a line and a hub. And they do all this by balancing the needs for both standing out and fitting in, especially with nature.

“The most important part of the project is the landscape,” says Selgas. Whether you’re on the walkway or in the café, you’re always surrounded by trees and plantings. “On most projects, landscaping is the last thing considered and the first to get cut. Not here.” #greenery@simoderna

*️⃣Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption

Architect #Nervi #PierLuigiNervi and #Belluschi #PietroBelluschi
City #SanFrancisco
Country #USA #NA

🔤The cathedral is organized on a square plan. From this geometric clarity, the building rises dramatically into a hyperbolic paraboloid roof form that soars 60m above the ground. The geometry conveys a sense of both stability and transcendence: the square anchors the structure to the earth, while the sweeping roof gestures toward the heavens.

At the roof’s apex, a cross-shaped skylight draws daylight into the interior, illuminating the altar at the center of the liturgical space. This compositional move encapsulates the post–Vatican II emphasis on collective worship.

The light is not decorative but structural to the experience of space, shaping the perception of volume and material with an almost liturgical rhythm.

*️⃣Akita international university library

Architect #Senda #MitsuruSenda
City #Akita
Country #Japan #AP

🔤Treating books as the collective knowledge of the past, the design is based on a coliseum, with an amphitheatre built from local cedar wood creating an incredible stage for students and their chosen texts.

Like an unfurled summer parasol, the roof is left uncovered, with each wooden beam exposed to form an intricate pattern above.

While the option of working 24-hours a day throughout the year may seem stress-inducing, the calm and natural atmosphere of the library, created by the cedar and natural shape, avoids this entirely
