*️⃣Inntel Hotels Zaandam

Architect #WAM
City #Zaandam close to #Amsterdam
Country #Netherlands #EU

🔤The colosal, twelve-storey-high hotel tower, essentially square in plan, is a monumental stacking and interpretation of various green-painted house types typical of the Zaan region, ranging from a stately notary’s dwelling to worker’s cottages. #context@simoderna

‘The Blue House’, inspired by the work Claude Monet painted at Zaandam in 1871, is the ultimate attention-grabber.

Fusion represents an inventive way of linking present and past, tradition and innovation, high culture and low.

*️⃣Glashaus Reutlingen

Architect #Wulf
City #Reutlingen
Country #Germany #EU

🔤Reutlingen’s new landmark has opened: the “Glashaus”, a striking structure made of a timber load-bearing framework and around 28,000 glass tiles. What makes it unique is that the building is not only an architectural highlight, but also prevents one of the oldest continuous rows of half-timbered houses in southern Germany from collapsing. #heritage@simoderna

The history of the site stretches back decades. In 1972, the so-called Stone House was demolished at the same location after being deemed structurally unsound. Without this supporting structure, the adjacent half-timbered buildings gradually began to lean more dangerously over the following decades.

The roof and facade surfaces are clad with a homogeneous layer of glass “beaver-tail” tiles. Depending on the conditions of incident light the wooden trusswork behind it is more or less visible, and the building appears translucent or glittering, like a chimera. #nightlight@simoderna

*️⃣Intercontinental Shanghai Wonderland Hotel

Architect #JADE #JADEQA
City #Shanghai
Country #China #AP

🔤Situated in an 88-meter-deep, water-filled, disused quarry, the Intercontinental Shanghai Wonderland Hotel contains only two levels above ground, with 16 more levels plunging into the quarry below.

16 levels cascade down the side of the quarry in a spectacular “glass waterfall”. At the base, the two lowest levels are sunk underwater.

Completion of the world’s first quarry hotel marks the latest in a series of milestones for China, who can also claim the world’s longest sea bridge and the world’s tallest atrium.

*️⃣La Samaritaine

Architect #SANAA and #SRA architects
City #Paris
Country #France #EU

🔤This project is the renovation of La Samaritaine, a late-19th century “Grand magasin” in Paris. The site is of great historical significance and is overlooking the Seine. #heritage

"Our design for the Rivoli façade revitalizes the image of La Samaritaine. The soft waves of the glass echo the rhythm and scale of neighboring fenestration, establishing continuity along this busy commercial street."

To further enhance the integration of the new design within its urban context the glass reflects and transforms the surrounding environment, creating a subtle combination of the historical and the contemporary across its surface.
"Our intention is to establish a harmonious relationship between those parts that are renovated and those that are new."
