🔤Enveloped by this dizzying urban spectacle, is a 24.4 meter diameter two-story glass drum with a beautifully crafted conical support with a concave vertical surface that stands on its apex.

Clad in warm timber, the central support is formed of 1,461 European white oak profiles. #wood@simoderna. A carefully crafted edge detail on each slat allows air to be extracted out through the central structure with an absorptive acoustic backing layer.

The fully glazed drum surrounding both floors provides dramatic 360-degree views, juxtaposing the intense urbanism with the quiet greenery of the new landscape.

🔤The Former French Concession has long put its stamp on this part of Shanghai, and it's obviously an honour for a French architect to design an urban space here in tune with its urbanism, its plane trees, narrow streets, and inhabited landscapes. "Between Ma Dang and Dan Shui streets, it was tempting to create a shortcut that would be an urban and commercial passageway, a sequence evoking vanished surroundings that have been completely reimagined and are new and modern; a high, narrow street that's covered and protected..."

The exterior, in a greyish-beige colour, offers glimpses through the two entrances on Ma Dang and Dan Shui streets, of a surprising array of lights, colours, and vegetation. A shopping street on two levels, sequenced by overhead walkways and small bridges, is submerged between two flowery walls made up of rows of earthenware jars planted with different species, both green and coloured.

🔤The city of Fukuoka desperately needed a new government office building, yet the only available site was a public park in the center of town. When news emerged that this potential new structure would be located upon the last remaining green area in the city, the citizens of Fukuoka erupted in protest. Ambasz won this commission by maintaining the original size of the park while providing the city of Fukuoka with a powerful symbolic structure at its center. #greenery@simoderna

It is founded on the concept that nature has to cover the greyness of buildings, and the aim of the architect has been that of giving back to the community the surface on which the building had to be constructed. Emilio Ambasz commented that

"the building is at the heart of a city that featured a 2 hectares plaza, and now it still has a 2 hectares plaza."

🔤The building was designed in the late 1960s by William Pereira & Associates. Considering the location, Pereira originally conceived of a spherical building resting atop a pedestal, with the structural elements on the inside. After several drafts of this ball-shaped design, the structural elements were deemed as being too space-consuming, and they were moved to the outside of the structure, essentially resulting in the current "lantern" design.

The arches of the building, in combination with the design of the individual floors, are intended to look like hands holding a stack of books. The concept of changing space influenced many other works, including the Seattle Central Library.

Pereira envisioned that future additions to the original building would form terraced levels around the tower base descending into the canyon. The tower is a prime example of brutalist architecture.

🔤This gravity-defying construction was inaugurated on the occasion of the World Ski Championships in 1970. The original raw concrete version of Hotel Panorama was part of the new village of Štrbské Pleso, a project to construct a ski resort in the heart of the Slovak Tatra Mountains. #retro

The hotel displays Řihák's background is sculpture, with a massing composed of stacked rectangular prisms supported by unevenly spaced steel supports located on top of the hotel's core amenities.

The hotel's original brutalist exterior and interior finish has not been retained due to modernisation, however its unique shape has.
