*️⃣Canton TV tower

Architect #IBA
City #Guangzhou
Country #China #AP

🔤"We wanted to offer the city, something simple but complex, a new form that would be in tune with the contemporary times and that would challenge the current building technologies. Where most historical skyscrapers were bearing male characteristics; being angular, heavy and based on repetition, we defined our tower to have the identity of a female; smooth, curved, slender and gracious, in short a sexy tower." - (c) IBA

Single curved surfaces like cylinders have weaknesses. Double curved surfaces, as the hyperboloid in question, are curved in two directions and thus avoid these weak directions. This means that you can get away with far less material to carry a load, which makes them very economical. The second reason is that it is made entirely of straight lines (pic. 3) reducing costs by avoiding curved beams. #budget@simoderna

*️⃣Städel Museum extension

Architect #Schneider #Schumacher #SSA
City #Frankfurt
Country #Germany #EU

🔤The new space below the garden houses the 20th century art collection. This space is dominated by a gently domed, airy ceiling with circular roof #glass lights. These "eyes for art" were specially developed for the Städel extension and are designed to be walked on.

The domed ceiling is a prominent feature in the topography of the garden above and resembles a land art object. “Frankfurt is given not only a distinctive and unique exhibition space, but a state of the art green building too.” (Excerpt from the competition jury)

The extension to the museum is placed along the central axis reinstating the historic spatial arrangement. #heritage

*️⃣The Wuppertaler Schwebebahn (Suspension Railway)

Architect #Langen #EugenLangen
City #Wuppertal close to #Dusseldorf
Country #Germany #EU

🔤The Wuppertaler Schwebebahn is a suspension railway in Wuppertal, Germany. It is the oldest electric elevated railway with hanging cars in the world. The cars are suspended from a single rail built underneath a supporting #steel frame.

Eugene Langen first offered the technology to the cities of Berlin, Munich, and Breslau which all turned it down. However, the towns of Barmen, Elberfeld, and Vohwinkel along the banks of the river Wupper were intrigued by the technology’s ability to connect their communities. The first track opened in 1901. #retro

The railway line is credited with growth of the original cities and their eventual merger into Wuppertal. The Schwebebahn carries approximately 80,000 passengers through the city per weekday.

*️⃣The Vancouver House

Architect #Ingels #BjarkeIngels #BIG
City #Vancouver
Country #Canada #NA

🔤The tower is located at the main entrance to Vancouver, next to the Granville bridge and a neighboring park, meaning several urban constraints- setbacks on the lot. What was left was a small triangular site nearly too small to build upon. The 30-meter separation from the bridge was defined as the bare-minimum distance until the building reached 30 meters up in the air, after which it could grow back out - allowing BIG to double the floor plate.

As a result, Vancouver House emerges subtly from the ground and expands as it rises, granting visual access to the breadth of Vancouver's natural surroundings. What seems like a surreal gesture is a highly responsive architecture – shaped by its environment. #context@simoderna

"The Vancouver house is a contemporary descendent of the Flatiron building in New York City reclaiming the lost spaces for living as the tower escapes the noise and traffic at its base," said Ingels.

Project was selected by #CTBUH as the best skyscraper of the year 2021. #award@simoderna
