The striking design was slowly conceived of through DDG’s extensive survey and research of the neighborhood – in which it found 250 cast iron loft buildings. XOCO’s façade derived from the designers’ fascination with the historic buildings’ “kit of parts” industrialization and its reliance upon componentry and patterns.
To celebrate this style of architecture, yet modernize it for the 21st century, DDG opted to replicate the bay spacing found in the area, use cast aluminum as it is lighter and more affordable, and hang the custom structure over a massive glass wall, in order to maintain a sense of privacy for residents.

Air vents open at the top of the towers, taking advantage of the negative pressure on the lee-side of the profile to draw hot air out from the atrium, assisted by the thermal effect of the heat build-up on the tips of the wings. The wings are glazed to channel natural light into the galleries below. #sustainability@simoderna
The museum spaces are located within a mound, which has textured faceted panels that are an abstraction of the topography of Jebel Hafeet. Materials have been carefully selected to resonate with the local surroundings and mirror historic buildings across the seven Emirates, which reflect the changing colour of the sand in different locations. #context@simoderna

Throughout the terminal building, soffits are inspired by traditional basket weaving. Suspended under the building’s lightweight #steel grid shell structure, a latticed soffit filters daylight into the vast terminal space throughout the day. 180 skylights are strategically placed around structural ‘trees,’ to bring natural light deep into the space while ensuring it is distributed evenly.
#Interior materials are warm and welcoming, evoking the Cambodian vernacular in a contemporary manner. The terminal will also be almost entirely run on energy generated by an onsite photovoltaic farm. #sustainability@simoderna

The project draws inspiration from the familiar everyday object of blinds, extracting a sense of unfamiliar perception. Light passing through the #brick slats is separated into threads, intertwining light and shadow.
In the center of the building, layers of dark #blue #steel are spread out, with the color extracted from the seawater of the Tianjin port, and the more delicate cutting form corresponds to the undulating waves, interpreting the spirit of the sea that embraces all rivers and the urban temperament of Tianjin. The large arched doorways progress upwards, as if the tide is surging with ripples, symbolizing the dissemination and spread of knowledge through books.

The Rain Vortex is the world’s tallest indoor waterfall and transforms into a light and sound show in the evening. During the region’s frequent and powerful thunderstorms, recirculated, natural rainwater will flow at more than 10,000 gallons per minute, which helps provide cooling and airflow in the landscape environment, collecting significant rainwater to be re-used in the building. By night, the glazed facade helps dematerialize the building, revealing the glowing garden within. #sustainability
