The facility's curved concrete interior atrium alcoves are particularly distinctive. Despite this extensive use of cold concrete, its red brick walls, copper roofing, #red tile floors and rich wooden interior adornments give the structure a warm atmosphere.

The space between the art gallery and the science museum forms the public plaza in the center of Changzhou. With its water features and generous landscaping, it provides an inviting ambiance and serves as a meeting point in the district.
A water course running diagonally through the 17 hectare site links all the modules together and acts as a source of lighting for the restaurants in the basement.

Six level steel-ribbed slabs appear to float from the street, supported by only thirteen vertical steel lattice columns that stretch from the ground plane to the roof. This striking visual quality, which is one of the most identifiable characteristics of the project, is comparable to large trees in a forest and functions as light shafts as well as storage for all of the utilities, networks, and systems.
The four largest tubes are situated at the corners of the plates, which serve as the principal means of support and bracing. Five of the nine smaller tubes contain elevators, while the other four are more crooked and carry the ducts and wires.

"One similarity between architecture and bookmaking is that both have unbelievably long traditions but are also forced to be of the moment, constantly updating in order to survive." — Rem Koolhas

The edges of the building are lifted from the ground creating three aisles which accommodate the book collection and, at the same time, enclose a central triangular space. This configuration also allows the visitor to access the building at its center, rather than laboriously entering from the perimeter. The aisles are designed as a topography of shelving, interspersed with spaces for reading, socializing and browsing.

Architect #DDG
City #NewYork
Country #USA #NA
The striking design was slowly conceived of through DDG’s extensive survey and research of the neighborhood – in which it found 250 cast iron loft buildings. XOCO’s façade derived from the designers’ fascination with the historic buildings’ “kit of parts” industrialization and its reliance upon componentry and patterns.
To celebrate this style of architecture, yet modernize it for the 21st century, DDG opted to replicate the bay spacing found in the area, use cast aluminum as it is lighter and more affordable, and hang the custom structure over a massive glass wall, in order to maintain a sense of privacy for residents.
