*️⃣One Central Park

Architect #JeanNouvel #Nouvel #AJN
City #Sydney
Country #Australia #AP

🔤A hovering cantilever crowns the pinnacle of One Central Park. Here there are a beguiling assembly of motorised mirrors that capture sunlight, and direct the rays down onto Central Park’s gardens. After dark the structure is a canvas for leading light artist Yann Kersalé’s LED art installation that carves a shimmering firework of movement in the sky. This brings a new starlit architectural shape to the One Central Park design. #kinetic

Hydroponic walls and low profile horizontal planters and support cables integrated into the tower’s facades support a variety of climbing and spreading plants. The plants act as a natural sun control device that changes with the seasons, shielding the apartments from direct sun during summer while admitting a maximum of sunlight in winter. #greenery

Project was selected by #CTBUH as the best skyscraper of the year 2014. #award

*️⃣Bolwoningen

Architect #Kreijkamp #DriesKreijkamp
City #sHertogenbosch #Denbosch
Country #Netherlands #EU

🔤During the late 60s, the Dutch Government started to fund experimental housing projects. This period allowed some iconic structures of today, such as the Cube House, to start taking shape. #retro

Dries Kreijkamp began experimenting with new forms of living within spherical spaces. The word Bolwoningen translates as ball or bulb houses. The scheme he produced was simple, and consisted of two interlocking parts: a cylindrical base, accommodating storage and utility spaces.

The architect originally designed the structure to be made of polyester to ensure its incredible lightness. The polyester changed into two concrete layers with glass-fiber reinforcement and rock wool insulation. #GFRC

With its lightweight, affordable, and adaptable design, spherical houses can be located anywhere. Enabling this was Krejikamp’s path toward making them widespread.

A more detailed history and an outcome.

*️⃣Chongqing Guotai Arts Center

Architect #CADG
City #Chongqing
Country #China #AP

🔤Simple beam components generate connections and permeability through interpenetration, overlapping, and cantilevering.

This complexity, arising from the accumulation of simple elements, resonates with a traditional construction technique widely used in the Han Dynasty known as tícòu (题凑). The term tí refers to the ends of wooden beams, while còu describes the method of their arrangement. This method embodies a connection with Qin–Han culture, and the #black and #red colors used are those revered in the Han period.

In terms of color, the building demonstrates regional distinctiveness—its red edges and corners stand out among the high-rises, offering people a sense of orientation and belonging.

In addition, the red components form part of the building’s ventilation system, while the black components contain water that acts as a coolant. Together they create an external ecological energy-saving system. #sustainability

*️⃣ Changsha Meixihu International Culture and Art Centre

Architect #ZahaHadid #Hadid #ZHA
City #Changsha
Country #China #AP

🔤The new Culture & Arts Centre by Zaha Hadid Architects incorporates a contemporary art museum, a theatre and a multipurpose hall with bars, hospitality suites, as well as spaces for community workshops.

The center’s #white structures made of #GFRC take on futuristic forms, featuring ribbon-like undulations both inside and out that reflect the pedestrian pathways that weave through the campus, not to mention the walking trails on the adjacent Festival Island.

These three civic institutions are uniquely defined and separate, yet complement each other with different opening times creating vitality throughout the day and evening. The theatre becomes active as the art museum begins to conclude its day-time operations, whilst the variety of events in the smaller theatre ensures it will be used at all times.

*️⃣Lloyd’s building

Architect #Rogers #RichardRogers #RSHP
City #London
Country #England #EU

🔤Lloyd’s of London is the world’s greatest insurance market. It had moved its dealing room twice and wanted a building that would provide for its needs well into the 21st century.

Richard Rogers Partnership proposed a building where the dealing room could expand or contract, according to the needs of the market, by means of a series of galleries around a central space. To maximise space, services are banished to the perimeter.

This is similar to the Centre Pompidou, which Rogers completed with Renzo Piano in the late 1970s, and has equally uncluttered and highly flexible internal spaces.

As a result, Lloyd’s became a complex grouping of towers, almost Gothic in feeling – an effect enhanced by the height of the external plant-room towers.
