*️⃣IAC Building

Architect #FrankGehry #Gehry
City #NewYork
Country #USA #NA

🔤This deconstructivist style building, headquarters of the American Internet company InterActiveCorp was the first project undertaken by Frank Gehry in the “Big Apple” in 2007.

Barry Diller, the head of IAC who was intimately involved with the project, mandated that the facade be covered in smooth glass rather than wrinkling titanium, as Gehry had originally planned.

The 10-story building is divided horizontally into two main levels of five floors each, with a narrowing on the sixth floor. It is divided into five vertical sections at lower levels and three on top, further enhancing the appearance of the sails of a ship. Because of its shape, composition and color is also conceptually related to an iceberg.

City #Harads
Country #Sweden #EU

🔤Northern Sweden is known for its natural beauty, expansive forests, and distinctive biosphere. Strong climatic contrasts through the seasons have required highly resilient architectural types, incorporating the local materials of wood and stone. The Treehotel in Swedish Lapland is known for its broad variety of cabins, with each cabin having a distinct identity that reacts differently to the forest.

*️⃣Metropol Parasol

Architect #JMayerH #Mayer
City #Sevilla
Country #Spain #EU

🔤Inspired in the vaults of Seville’s cathedral, and in the rubber plants of the Cristo de Burgos square, the aim of these large #wood structures is to protect pedestrians from the intense Sevillian sun, aside from including new uses in their four levels to reactivate this neighborhood.

Realized as one of the largest and most innovative bonded timber-constructions with a polyurethane coating, the parasols grow out of the archaeological excavation site into a contemporary landmark, defining a unique relationship between the historical and the contemporary city.

*️⃣Shanghai library east

Architect #SHL
City #Shanghai
Country #China #AP

🔤"The site is located in Shanghai, at the end of Shiji Boulevard. When we first looked at it, we were struck at how green the place is. The vicinity to Century Park, one of the largest areas of public green in Pudong, represents an unique opportunity of connecting the city with the nature. We hence propose to conceive the library as a destination within the park, that should almost appear to float above the trees. The representation of a rock with its sedimentary strata is expressed in the glass facade."

Despite its forward-thinking approach, the library also pays homage to classical Chinese scholarship through its design, which is reminiscent of the scholar’s rock, the Taihu stone, a symbol of ancient literati, thus anchoring the modern building in Chinese history and tradition.

Taihu stones, or scholars’ rocks, served as muses for the Jin dynasty intelligentsia—sources of creative inspiration and meditation. In its architecture, interior design, and programming, Shanghai Library East evokes a scholar’s rock in a Chinese garden: a polyhedral stone enveloped in an emerald tree canopy.

*️⃣Fenix Museum of Migration

Architect #MAD
City #Rotterdam
Country #Netherlands #EU

🔤The warehouse in Rotterdam's City Harbour has been converted into a museum by restoration consultants Bureau Polderman to tell stories of migration through art. #refurbishment

Its centerpiece is the Tornado – a pair of giant helical staircases by MAD that winds up from the ground floor of the building and out from its roof, culminating at a viewpoint overlooking the River Maas.

The Tornado was designed to symbolize movement. "The theme migration is about movement, so the staircase is about movement." Meanwhile the steps are finished with 12,500 planks of modified wood called Kebony, designed to emulate a ship.

Once the largest warehouse in the world, it was chosen for the museum for its history as a storage space for the Holland America Line, via which millions of migrants, including Albert Einstein, were transported in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The structure also features a 6,750-square-meter green roof planted with sedum, significantly reducing pressure on the sewer system, lowering flood risk, and easing the burden on water treatment facilities. #sustainability
