*️⃣Cube houses

Architect #PietBlom #Blom
City #Rotterdam
Country #Netherlands #EU

🔤Hans Mentink, the politician in charge of spatial planning at the time, had grown tired of the utilitarian architecture which was increasingly prevalent and believed that
"Rotterdam was in need of architecture with some life in it.”

#quote@simoderna

Metaphorically, he considered the experience of living in trees; each elevated cube represented a tree and therefore they collectively represented a forest. Blom realized that elevating inhabitable masses on narrow trunks would maximize public space below while creating ideal views from above, a concept that was inspired by the work of Le Corbusier.

In addition to residential cubes, there are also two larger “supercubes”. The southernmost supercube was developed as a school of architecture while the nothernmost supercube was intended for commercial functions.

One residential cube has been opened to the public as a response to curious tourists, so that visitors can experience the unique spatial volume. Recently the two supercubes have been converted: the school of architecture into a youth hostel, and the unresolved commercial space into transitional social housing.

*️⃣ Majara Hotel

Architect #ZAV
City #Hormoz close to #BandarAbbas
Country #Iran #ME

🔤The project is a multitude of small-scale domes built with the super- adobe technique of Nader Khalili, the innovative and simple technique using rammed earth and sand. Domes are familiar structures in the region. Their small scale makes them compatible with the building capabilities of local craftsmen and unskilled workers, which have been prepared for this project with previous smaller projects.

The infinite number of colorful particles, be they soil, sand, gravel or stone, pile up and form the rainbow topography of Hormuz island. In this project a carpet is woven with granular knots inspired by the particles that make up the ecotone of the island. The sandbags that create the spatial particles (aka domes) are filled with the dredging sand of the Hormuz dock, as if the earth has swollen to produce space for accommodation. #context

Under the economic distress of sanctions, increasing the GDP generates social change, which in this project is achieved by: 1. Building economically, to the benefit of the client. 2. Earmarking a bigger share of the budget to labor costs rather than expensive imported materials, to the benefit of the local population, empowering them by offering training for construction skills. 3. An adaptive and future-proof spatial scenario that can respond to unpredicted need, to the benefit of the client and the island. 4. Using materials and human resources from Iran, to reduce construction and transportation costs and increase the GDP, to the benefit of the whole country. #budget

Project was selected by #Archdaily as the best building in residential category in 2021. #award

*️⃣National Art Center Tokyo

Architect #Kurokawa #KishoKurokawa
City #Tokyo
Country #Japan #AP

🔤The entrance lobby atrium features 21.6 meters high-ceiling and the undulated #glass façade. The energy-saving design cuts out of solar heat and ultraviolet rays, and the building has a symbiotic relationship with the surrounding areas.

As the trees surrounding the museum grow, they will enclose the atrium in a forested public space.
Also in the atrium space are two inverted cones, the upper portion of both featuring the restaurant and café.

The atrium connects with the Roppongi downtown as one part of the street, perhaps to be an element of Roppongi’s famous nightlife.

*️⃣Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen

Architect #MVRDV
City #Rotterdam
Country #Netherlands #EU

🔤One of the building’s most striking features is the reflective façade, which is comprised of 6,609 square metres of #curvedglass subdivided into 1,664 mirrored panels. The mirroring panels ensure the integration of the design with its surroundings, by reflecting and thus honouring the activity and the nature of the Museumpark, designed by landscape architect Yves Brunier with OMA in the nineties. #context

The form of the 39,5-metre-high Depot is ovoid, a building ‘in the round’. Its bowl-like shape means that the ground-level footprint is small – maintaining views into and routes through the Museumpark – while the roof is as expansive as possible.

Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen, the world’s first fully accessible art depot, is located at Museumpark in the centre of Rotterdam. The assignment was to offer a glimpse behind the scenes of the museum world and make the whole art collection accessible to the public.
