🔤In 1992 Foster and Partners was one of fourteen non-German practices invited to enter the competition to rebuild the Reichstag. The practice won the competition after a second stage in 1993. The building s transformation is rooted in the Bundestag's significance as a democratic forum and a commitment to public accessibility, a sensitivity to history. #context

At the core of Reichstag's #glass cupola a light sculptor reflects horizon light into the chamber. A high-tech shield monitors the path of the sun and electronically controls the light emitted through the dome. #kinetic

As night falls, this process is reversed. The cupola becomes a beacon, signalling the transparency and vigour of the German democratic process.

And Foster frequently notes the important symbolism of the public and the politicians entering the building through the same entrance, under the classical pediment inscribed, “To the German People.”.

🔤In 2013, Montpellier city council launched the “Folie Richter” competition. It sought to identify a blueprint for a beacon tower to enrich the city’s architectural heritage.

The four architects devised a building inspired by a tree, with balconies that branch off the trunk and shades that sprout out of and protect its façade. The attention paid to its setting, and to local lifestyles, guided the architects throughout the design phase.

The many technical innovations of L’Arbre Blanc include the terraces, whose cantilevers, which are up to 7.5 metre-long, constitute a world first. #cantilever

The proportions of the #steel balconies emphasise this aim to embrace the outdoors, as do the leaves that fold out in search of the sunlight. Forming an effective protective veil for the façade, they provide the necessary shade and break up skew winds to help air circulate more harmoniously.

🔤The university staff wanted the structure to promote new learning meth. The old model of life-less classrooms off long daylight-less corridors seemed dead. A university now more than ever had to exist as a social place to bring people together and encourage spontaneous dialogue and exchange.

The studio set out to design a corridor-less building that would make students and teachers bump into each other as much as possible. Every room brings light in from outside at the same time as facing onto a naturally-ventilated central atrium which allows students to be visually connected to each other.

Choosing reinforced #concrete as the optimum construction material for the project, the studio explored treating it like hand made clay; allowing its surfaces to have the qualities of detail and warmth that people would not expect of concrete.

🔤It is a work that seems to be effortless, without any visible functionality, just a drawing, and yet everything in it was thought-out: space, scale, sections, viewpoints, etc. Niemeyer does not use the curve as a detail or ornament, but is always "building the architectural form in its integrity since it already incorporates the moldable and indivisible logic of reinforced #concrete", the technical effort made invisible gives way to light, stable, and surprisingly sustained shapes. Molded and self-supported, it shows no sign of breaking the law of gravity, in such a way that its spatiality becomes natural, while the supporting pillars discreetly follow its curves.

The complex consists of four geometrically pure buildings: a rectangle that holds a public library, a cylinder where the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC) is located, a dome that shelters the Music Palace, and a 36-meter-high pyramid that houses the Human Rights Monument.

Niemeyer's formalism is regarded as a deviation from the original principles of the Modern Architecture movement. There is an emphasis on artistic expression and for this reason, he becomes associated with free-form modernism.

🔤In 2006, the competition jury selected ZHA’s proposal to build the new institute. The design significantly reduces the building’s footprint by ‘floating’ much of the IFI’s facilities above the entrance courtyard to preserve the existing landscape integral to the 2002 master-plan and create a new public space for the campus.

A ramp leads between the trees to connect the research lounges on the second floor directly with the campus. The Issam Fares Institute building is defined by the many routes and connections interweaving the pathways and views within the campus to create a forum for the exchange of ideas at the heart of the university.
