*️⃣Ludwig Erhard Haus

Architect #Grimshaw #NicholasGrimshaw
City #Berlin
Country #Germany #EU

🔤The steel-clad building is comprised of fifteen steel arches of progressively differing spans that create a ribcage that undulates in height. The unusual shape responds to exacting building restrictions while maximising use of the site.

Inside, vast, open-plan floor plates are supported by the ribcage and a series of slender, fire-resistant steel hangars, with an expansive boulevard at ground level creating a central public thoroughfare.

The atria draw natural daylight deep into the heart of the Ludwig Erhard Haus and, as a complement to this downward movement of light, also house the aesthetically dynamic aluminium-clad lifts that soar upward towards the offices, offering views over Berlin as they scale the full height of building.

*️⃣The Eden Project

Architect #Grimshaw #NicholasGrimshaw
City #Bodelva
Country #England #EU

🔤Grimshaw's starting point was the geodesic system made famous by the American architect Buckminster Fuller, who designed the Montreal Biosphere in Canada. Before Eden, Grimshaw had designed a similar structure for Waterloo International Station in London. The geodesic concept provided for least weight and maximum surface area on the curve – with strength.

The clay pit was still being mined when the Biomes were designed. In the face of this constantly shifting landscape, Grimshaw hit on the idea of soap bubbles. Basing the ‘lean-to’ Biome structures on soap bubbles was a perfect way to build on the uneven and shifting sands of the pit.

The steelwork weighs only slightly more than the air contained by the Biomes. The structures are more likely to blow away than down, so are tied into the foundations with ground anchors, a bit like tent pegs.

Although our ETFE windows are very light (less than 1% of the equivalent area of glass) they are strong enough to take the weight of a car. What’s more, ETFE can transmit UV light, and is non-stick and self-cleaning.

*️⃣Chongqing Zhongshuge Bookstore

Architect #XLiving (X+Living)
City #Chongqing
Country #China #AP

🔤Once inside, scattered “lampshade-shaped bookshelves” are found throughout the dark brown lobby. Visitors can feel as if they were in a bright and warm private study when they read in the warm light projected from inside the lampshades.

Further down the corridor is the main study, a “ladder hall” where the stair double as bookshelves and the mirrored ceiling overhead doubles the size of the already astonishing room. Space allows visitors to rest on the shelved steps and be immersed in books and thoughts.

Up to the 4th floor from the “ladder hall” is a leisure area, where visitors can enjoy the aroma of coffee or a taste of good tea and immerse themselves into a tranquil world of different stories by reading.

Project was selected by #Archdaily as the best building in interior category in 2020. #award

*️⃣Reichstagskuppel

Architect #Foster #NormanFoster
City #Berlin
Country #Germany #EU

🔤In 1992 Foster and Partners was one of fourteen non-German practices invited to enter the competition to rebuild the Reichstag. The practice won the competition after a second stage in 1993. The building s transformation is rooted in the Bundestag's significance as a democratic forum and a commitment to public accessibility, a sensitivity to history. #context

At the core of Reichstag's #glass cupola a light sculptor reflects horizon light into the chamber. A high-tech shield monitors the path of the sun and electronically controls the light emitted through the dome. #kinetic

As night falls, this process is reversed. The cupola becomes a beacon, signalling the transparency and vigour of the German democratic process.

And Foster frequently notes the important symbolism of the public and the politicians entering the building through the same entrance, under the classical pediment inscribed, “To the German People.”.

*️⃣L’Arbre Blanc Residential Tower

Architect #DREAM, #NicolasLaisne #Laisne, #SouFujimoto #Fujimoto #SFA and #Oxo
City #Montpellier
Country #France #EU

🔤In 2013, Montpellier city council launched the “Folie Richter” competition. It sought to identify a blueprint for a beacon tower to enrich the city’s architectural heritage.

The four architects devised a building inspired by a tree, with balconies that branch off the trunk and shades that sprout out of and protect its façade. The attention paid to its setting, and to local lifestyles, guided the architects throughout the design phase.

The many technical innovations of L’Arbre Blanc include the terraces, whose cantilevers, which are up to 7.5 metre-long, constitute a world first. #cantilever

The proportions of the #steel balconies emphasise this aim to embrace the outdoors, as do the leaves that fold out in search of the sunlight. Forming an effective protective veil for the façade, they provide the necessary shade and break up skew winds to help air circulate more harmoniously.
