*️⃣Mikimoto Ginza 2

Architect #Ito #ToyoIto
City #Tokyo
Country #Japan #AP

🔤The building has become a jewel in Ginza’s district, with an exterior that glows in a pearlescent pink hue, while its windows resemble a fractal composition. The arrangement of openings derives from quasicrystalline geometry.

The tower is essentially a rectangular box, and from a distance, it resembles a typical skyscraper. However, it is at night when it likely becomes most striking, as multicolored lights accentuate its irregular windows and reveal the glamorous interior.

To achieve seamless, joint-free façades, the welded connections were carefully field-polished, and the steel received multiple paint layers - from corrosion-resistant primers to topcoats. By eliminating the typical curtain wall joints, the building's exterior achieves a distinct abstract quality.

*️⃣Biomuseo

Architect #FrankGehry #Gehry
City #PanamaCity
Country #Panama #NA

🔤The open-air public atrium is covered by an imposing steel structure with bright-colored metal canopies, referencing the vibrant buildings and zinc roofs of Caribbean vernacular architecture. At the same time, the canopy design provides shelter from Panama’s heavy downpours. #context

Due to the complexity of their construction and the lack of experience in the place of buildings of this style, it was necessary to perform a full-scale model for workers to learn how to install the components of the different stages of the construction.

Ideally, the authorities expect a "Bilbao effect" from the museum. According to their plan, it should become the same symbol of Panama-the city and Panama-the country, as the Utson Opera House has become for Sydney and Australia.

*️⃣Under

Architect #Snohetta
City #Spangereid
Country #Norway #EU

🔤Upon arriving at the site, the visitor’s impressions of the unruly outdoors quickly dissolve as they are ushered through into the hushed, oak-clad foyer. Here, rough, wooden finishes and the sweet scent of timber transition into an elegant, oak staircase as one descends into the building. Dark, raw steel railings with brass tube handrails lead downwards to a softer interior as the ceiling surface changes from oak to textile. The warm, welcoming atmosphere inside the restaurant instills a sense of awe and mystery.

As a metaphor for the journey of descent, the color of the textile-clad interior turns darker and more intense the deeper one goes below water. The bespoke textiles stretched over custom acoustic panels, reference the colors of a sunset dropping into the ocean, accompanying one’s passage down the stairs.

On the mezzanine level and bar area, where the building touches the sea, a vertical window is cut into the side of the building, extending from above sea level down to the seabed. The window reveals the convergence of sea and air, with the volatile waterline dancing to the intensity of the wind. The view from the window will evolve gradually throughout the day and seasons, with the color of the water shifting from sapphire blue during a cold winter day, to emerald green in the summer season, when the algae set in.

*️⃣Ludwig Erhard Haus

Architect #Grimshaw #NicholasGrimshaw
City #Berlin
Country #Germany #EU

🔤The steel-clad building is comprised of fifteen steel arches of progressively differing spans that create a ribcage that undulates in height. The unusual shape responds to exacting building restrictions while maximising use of the site.

Inside, vast, open-plan floor plates are supported by the ribcage and a series of slender, fire-resistant steel hangars, with an expansive boulevard at ground level creating a central public thoroughfare.

The atria draw natural daylight deep into the heart of the Ludwig Erhard Haus and, as a complement to this downward movement of light, also house the aesthetically dynamic aluminium-clad lifts that soar upward towards the offices, offering views over Berlin as they scale the full height of building.

*️⃣The Eden Project

Architect #Grimshaw #NicholasGrimshaw
City #Bodelva
Country #England #EU

🔤Grimshaw's starting point was the geodesic system made famous by the American architect Buckminster Fuller, who designed the Montreal Biosphere in Canada. Before Eden, Grimshaw had designed a similar structure for Waterloo International Station in London. The geodesic concept provided for least weight and maximum surface area on the curve – with strength.

The clay pit was still being mined when the Biomes were designed. In the face of this constantly shifting landscape, Grimshaw hit on the idea of soap bubbles. Basing the ‘lean-to’ Biome structures on soap bubbles was a perfect way to build on the uneven and shifting sands of the pit.

The steelwork weighs only slightly more than the air contained by the Biomes. The structures are more likely to blow away than down, so are tied into the foundations with ground anchors, a bit like tent pegs.

Although our ETFE windows are very light (less than 1% of the equivalent area of glass) they are strong enough to take the weight of a car. What’s more, ETFE can transmit UV light, and is non-stick and self-cleaning.
