*️⃣Universita station

Architect #Rashid #KarimRashid and #AlessandroMendini #Mendini
City #Naples
Country #Italy #EU

🔤"The University of Naples subway station is highly trafficked by a multi-cultural, academic community of thousands of passengers a day. For the station we designed a creative concept that communicates and embodies knowledge in the new digital age."

This is the changing Italy and Universita station is a metaphor of this new wired global condition. Intersecting the space between the benches is an abstracted, SYNPOSIS sculpture reflecting the nodes of the brain and the synapses which occur within.

The platform level of the subway station is where the people spend the most static time. Seating is provided in the form of landscape forms. The walls of the subway platform feature backlit artwork, providing a continuous soft glow in the space. The digital artwork becomes “animated” through persistence of vision as commuters pass by on the train.

*️⃣Johnson Wax Headquarters

Architect #Wright #FrankLloydWright
City #Racine close to #Milwaukee
Country #USA #NA

🔤Designed by renowned American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the building was constructed between 1936 and 1939. The construction of this building played a significant role in reviving Wright’s career, which was facing a downturn.

The building showcases Wright’s interpretation of the Art Moderne style popular in the 1930s, with its many curvilinear forms created by over 200 curved “Cherokee red” bricks. The white stone trim and dendriform columns provide a striking contrast. All of the furniture, designed by Wright complements the building’s design.

The entrance's low ceiling creates a sense of compression, which is released upon entering the main building, where the tall dendriform columns create the illusion of more space. This concept of compression and release is present in many of Wright’s designs, including the Guggenheim Museum in New York City.

*️⃣Broad Museum

Architect #DSR #DillerScofdioRenfro #Diller #Scofdio #Renfro
City #LosAngeles
Country #USA #NA

🔤Dubbed “the veil and the vault,” the museum’s design merges the two key programs of the building: public exhibition space and the storage. Rather than relegate the storage to secondary status, “the vault” plays a key role in shaping the museum experience from entry to exit.

Its heavy opaque mass is always in view, hovering midway in the building. Its carved underside shapes the lobby below and public circulation routes. Its top surface is the floor of the third floor galleries.

The vault is enveloped by the #GFRC “veil,” a porous, honeycomb-like, exterior structure that spans across the block-long building and provides filtered natural daylight. The museum’s “veil” lifts at the corners, welcoming visitors into an active lobby. The public is then drawn upwards via escalator, tunneling through the vault, arriving onto nearly an acre of column-free gallery space bathed in light which specially diffused not to damage an exhibition.

🔤The ETFE skin is arranged as inflatables that have up to three air chambers. This not only improves the thermal insulation, but also allows the creation of shade through a pneumatic system. The middle layer is the one that manages to create the shadow. The first layer is transparent, the second and the third, have an inverse design pattern that, when deflated and put together, shadows creating a single opaque layer. #sustainability

In addition, it is non-stick, which prevents it from getting dirty and requiring cleaning maintenance. And it does not lose its characteristics of elasticity, transparency and hardness over time.

One of the facades has a temperature sensor system that activates a vertical cloud of nitrogen particles that, with the air generated by the ETFE #polymer coating, protects the interior of the building from solar radiation and cools it. #kinetic

Project was selected by #WAF as the best building of the year 2011. #award

*️⃣Petronas Towers

Architect #Pelli #Clarke #PelliClarke
City #KualaLumpur
Country #Malaysia #AP

🔤Rising from the site of a former racetrack, the Petronas Towers established Kuala Lumpur as the cultural and commercial capital of a nation poised for the future.

The Petronas Towers blend Islamic tradition with cutting-edge technology, breaking away from the typical international skyscraper style. Their design originally featured a 12-pointed star—a classic Islamic motif—but was changed to an 8-pointed star at the request of Malaysia's Prime Minister to better reflect Islamic symbolism.

This unique fusion of ancient geometry and modern engineering makes them more than just towers—they’re a cultural statement.

Since opening in 1997, the Petronas Towers have proven a vibrant engine for economic development, a beating heart for Malaysian culture. #retro
