The form is translated from the three faiths, carefully using the lens to define what is similar, as opposed to what is different.
The Imam Al-Tayeb Mosque is oriented towards Mecca. Light filters through the delicate GRP latticework of the mashrabiya screens, which circulate air while maintaining privacy. Four seamless, monolithic columns represent the Islamic notions of stability, order, and fullness and create a vaulting space that orients the visitors toward the mihrab.
The St. Francis Church is oriented towards the rising sun in the East. From the courtyard, two uneven columns suspend above the entrance symbolizing the testing of faith. Inspired by the altar of St Peter’s Basilica, a canopy of linear timber elements cascades down from the ceiling in a “shower of ecstatic redemption.”
The Moses Ben Maimon Synagogue is oriented towards Jerusalem. A series of three V-shaped columns amass to create a screen between the interior and exterior, referencing the overlapping layers of palm fronds on the sukkah—a structure used during Sukkot, the Jewish festival of shelter. A bronze mesh tent—symbolizing the original tabernacle— cascades from a skylight in the ceiling and drapes over the congregation.

A gently undulating wall, floating above the street on angled steel columns, will be visible from afar, creating a graceful, luminous, and welcoming image. At street level, shops and cafes will draw visitors and energize the surrounding neighborhood, while high above, the trees and flowers of the rooftop park will invite people to visit for longer periods, transforming the Transit Center from a commuter hub to an urban destination.
The heart of the Transit Center’s design is the rooftop park. Dense with nature and activities, it will have over a dozen entry points, potentially including bridges to surrounding buildings. Active and passive uses are woven into the landscape, including a 1,000-person amphitheater, cafes, and a children’s playground.

As a cluster of several square blocks differing in height and size, the new building reflects the internalised quality of the wider site. They are clad in grey titanium zinc – in keeping with the industrial nature of the area – which, together with the fritted mirrored glass used for the windows on the outward-facing façades, and the continuous metallic grids that cover the roofs, gives the volumes a strong monolithic appearance.
A distinguishing feature of the museum is its central hall, forming a court within a court. Its amoebic curved form sharply contrasts with the rigid geometry of the surrounding monolithic forms, as well as with the regular shape of the city block and its austere façades. This luminous glass space at the heart of the building extends above the surrounding rooflines, forming a lantern that acts as a beacon across the site.
The spaces benefit from generous daylight filtered through rooflight systems. The columns supporting the lantern structure form a curving peristyle court reminiscent of a medieval cloister with four entries at its cardinal points. The galleries adhere to a principle propagated by Adolf Loos whereby the height is proportional to the floor area: the larger the floor area, the higher the ceiling

Entrance is via a soaring four-storey-high atrium. Full-height glazing fills the space with natural light and creates a visual connection with the adjacent park, and four tiers of office levels step back to create a sequence of stepped internal terraces.
Every aspect of the scheme was designed in response to the local climate, including the composition of each facade – the eastern and western elevations are shaded by a screen of louvres, which rise the full height of the building. The thermal mass of the concrete soffits, combined with chilled beams, helps to naturally regulate the temperature and keep the offices cool. #sustainability
