🔤Inspired by the melancholic, unruly beauty of this postindustrial ruin, where nature has reclaimed a once vital piece of urban infrastructure, the new park interprets its inheritance. It translates the biodiversity that took root after it fell into ruin in a string of site–specific urban micro-climates along the stretch of railway that include sunny, shady, wet, dry, windy, and sheltered spaces.

The park helped catalyze new investment in the surrounding area, with significant new development and the emergence of a new mixed-use neighborhood. The ecology of the area has been enhanced with over 100,000 plants, comprising over 1,500 species of plants, birds and insects. The project serves as a model for
infrastructure reuse in other cities around the world.

🔤The building has to reflect both the promising modern future of Dalian, and its tradition as an important seaport as well as an industrial, commercial, and tourist center in China’s northeastern province of Liaoning.

The program defines the shape of the building, the inside literally pushing out and deforming the metallic skin of the building. The perforated aluminum slats of the exterior shell provide daylight to the inside, and give the building its striking sculptural appearance. The slats opened in some of the public areas offer selective views of the city and the bay of Dalian. New synergies are created ​“between the exterior skin, reacting to the climate, and the landscape surrounding it.”

The interior organization of the theater, the conference rooms and the circulations are comparable to an urban network of streets, plazas and identifiable ​“addresses” for better orientation. This arrangement also provides areas for informal meetings, relaxation and small talks before the conferences.

🔤The entire structure of the building is made of steel. Huge 48m warren trusses span the full width of the building. They are connected to columns at each end by a die-cast steel ‘gerberette’.

This massive, visible set of structural components removes the requirement for internal support and thus enables the creation of huge open spaces. The resulting 50 x 170m plateaus can be arranged and equipped for any activity.

To achieve maximum flexibility within these vast internal spaces, the services and circulation have been placed outside them. Lifts and escalators are contained within the support structure on the piazza façade. Escalators zig-zagging through transparent tubes up the front of the building afford increasingly extraordinary views out over Paris.

The colour-coded utilities (blue for air, green for water, yellow for electricity and red for vertical circulation) are positioned along the Rue Beaubourg, street-side façade.

Despite earlier widespread opposition to the project, the public was quick to embrace the Centre Pompidou. From the opening in 1977 more than 150 million visitors passed through its doors. This extraordinary popularity made it necessary to close the building in 1996 in order to renovate and enlarge public spaces. The Centre Pompidou re-opened in 2000.

🔤Both museums are designed as separate entities emphasizing their individual functional and artistic requirements and yet are merged in a monolithic body surrounded by a versatile facade.

A silvery shining and softly deformed ​“Cloud” serves as a central orientation and access point. The ​“Cloud” hosts a number of public functions on several floors, such as a café, a bookstore and a museum store.

The monolithic skin of the MOCAPE performs as a ​“dynamic” surface that was designed to respond to the urban context by twisting itself towards the center of the Futian Cultural District. This rotation also impacted the orientation of the entrance as well as the main circulatory flows, directing them towards the center of the district.

🔤The great reading room (the taller section of the building protects it from direct southern light) was arranged in receding levels. Through its size and its many-tiered, almost scenic design, the space effects a sense of the outdoors, which is further emphasized by the large plates of glass used in the “sky” glazing. An unob- structed view of the clouds nearly gives one the feeling of reading under the open sky.

The discussion about whether one central reading room or several separate rooms should be built was resolved by deciding in favour of both.

In terms of urban planning, architects bore in mind the fact that Berlin in a very flat city, tending more toward the horizontal than vertical, whose buildings are as a rule no more than 22 meters tall – with the exception of public buildings. In order to mark the significance of the library as a public place of collected knowledge and as an urban architectural emblem of the book, one part of the building was designed to cross the lines of the upper city limits reaching 38 meters high.

In order to make full use of the thermal mass of the ceilings and to make the climate of the rooms as pleasant as possible, suspended ceilings were avoided. All building automation fixtures have been placed in the floor or in the concrete ceilings. The air circulation vents in the ceiling activate the thermal mass of the concrete. The bare ceilings are thereby cooled and, in turn, absorb the warmth of the rooms. #sustainability
