I WISH/IF ONLY

✨Wishes about the present and future
I wish + past simple
To express that we want a situation (in the future or present) to be different.
Example: I wish i spoke Spanish. (I don’t speak Spanish)

✨Wishes about the past
I wish + past perfect
To express a regret or that we want a situation in the past to be different.
Example: I wish i hadn’t eaten so much. (I ate a lot)


✨Also we can use past modals (could and would) to talk about wishes for the future.

I wish + subject + would + bare infinitive
To express impatience, annoyance or dissatisfaction with a present action.
Example: I wish you would stop drinking alcohol. (You are drinking alcohol in the moment and it’s annoying me)

I wish + subject + could + bare infinitive
To express wish or regret concerning lack of ability.
Example: I wish i could ride a bicycle. (I can’t ride a bicycle)
