1- Godh Bharai is a ceremony that hold utmost spiritual significance in India. All the different lingual communities in India have their own name for this Hindu ritual. In Northern India, it is called Godh Bharai, in the East it is called 'Shaad' and in the South it is called Shrimantam.
2- How is godh bharai performed? While the rituals followed in various parts of the country on the occasion of godh bharai may differ, the essence remains the same - to bless the unborn baby and shower the pregnant mum-to-be with blessings and gifts.
In some homes, the pregnant mum-to-be is anointed with special oils by the elderly women in the family. She is then dressed up in a special saree and adorned with flowers. A puja is performed before the festivities begin.
Traditionally, godh bharai is a 'women-only' gathering. The ceremony may include adorning the mum-to-be with jewellery, making her wear bangles, filling her lap with gifts, fruits and sweets and laying out a feast before her. It is also common for the ceremony to be filled with singing, dancing and a fair amount of teasing and fun. It may include some games such as guessing the gender of the baby by the size and shape of the pregnant mum's belly or creating a names list for your baby.
3- Hindus wait until the seventh month of pregnancy to throw a godh bharai, as the pregnancy is considered safe at that point.
The day starts with a Ganesh Puja. When the expectant mother enters the room on her way to the puja space, a silk cloth with betel nut and one rupee coin is placed under her feet and this continues until she arrives. Her or her husband’s sister then gathers up the items.
After the puja, the expectant mother sits on a small four-legged stool and a red dot is put on her forehead (and sometimes on her hands as well). For protection a yellow thread is tied on the expectant mother’s wrist by her sister-in-law and she is offered sweet curd to eat.
4- Godh bharai is a religious ceremony and not just a gathering of friends like a baby shower. Godh bharai is done on an auspicious date selected by the priests. In some communities a puja is also performed during this ceremony.
5- Godh bharna is a very significant event in the lives of Hindu married women. This function that is held for and by women is celebrated with great festivity. It is a ceremony that celebrates the first pregnancy of the bride of the house and is held in the seventh month of pregnancy. In Hindu mythology 'godh' means the lap of the woman and 'bharna' means to fill. Therefore, the mother and mother-in-law of the prospective mother fill her godh, represented by the palav of her sari with items symbolizing a good omen like a coconut marked with a red swastika, moong, supari (betel nut) and silver coins in one rupee and quarter rupee denominations. “In short, there is nothing more beneficial for the heart than reading the Qur’aan and with contemplation and reflection…
If people were to possess a realization of what recitation of the Qur’aan with contemplation contains, they would devote themselves to it at the expense of anything else.
When the person reads it with reflection and he comes across an aayah that he is in need of, for the cure of his heart, he repeats it, even if he does so a hundred times or the whole night. Hence, to recite a single aayah of the Qur’aan with contemplation and reflection is better than reciting the Qur’aan to completion without any contemplation or reflection.
It is also more beneficial for the heart and more conducive to attaining eemaan and tasting the sweetness of the Qur’aan.”
