Helmut Newton (1920-2004)
"Newton enabled fashion photography to depict a more human and carnal version of the typically staid and stylized models.
Those photos were taken in the summer of 1979, after Newton was sent to Berlin by German Vogue. June, his wife, fellow photographer and essential collaborator, came up with the idea of revisiting spots Newton cherished during in his youth. Remarkably most of the sites, despite the epic destruction of the city during the war, were relatively intact including the Bismarck monument. These images, and "Bismark Monument" is a paradigm are fascinating for their unlikely combination of nostalgia and sexuality.
Like the best of Newton's work, those images have allusions to Film Noir, BDSM and of course the Femme Fatale. The suite of images that German Vogue published are some of the most iconic and celebrated images from Helmut Newton's career."

The Lynar family crypt in St. Nicholas church in Spandau.
Rocco Guerrini (German - Rochus, Graf zu Lynar; 1525 - 1596) was an Italian military engineer, most notable for his work on the Spandau Citadel.
The crypt is located in a west-easterly direction under the altar. Most of the coffins stored in it are positioned directly under the altar table. The dead lie with their heads to the west and face east towards the rising sun.
You can compare how the real Rocco Guerini was depicted during lifetime and as a sculpture for the alley of victory. In the beginning of the 20th century he was depicted more masculine and it wasn't shown that he lost one eye, which happened during the warum Spain.

Interpretation of the layout of the crypt
In early Christian times, the bones of the saints and martyrs to whom the church was dedicated lay beneath the altar in churches. The altar had small openings at the bottom to make the tomb visible. Later, from around the 8th century, the tomb of the saints was made accessible via steps. Bishops, abbots and other clerics were buried in a corridor around this burial vault. Eventually, as the veneration of the saints increased, a multi-aisled hall crypt developed (like a second church building under the actual church). Later, crypts were occasionally built in Baroque churches as princely crypts. The first churches in Baroque architecture were not built in Italy until the last decades of the 16th century. Such buildings did not yet exist north of the Alps at that time. Count Lynar therefore claimed this type of burial for himself and his family very early on in 1582.

The bear enclosure in the City Centre of Berlin.
The building in Köllnischer Park, originally built as a city cleaning center, was converted during nazi times into a bear enclosure to house Berlin's heraldic animals.
The kennel was not officially opened until 1939. A red-brick central wing contained three cages and various functional rooms, as well as two exercise areas with water ditches. Four bears died during the war, one survived and was transferred to the zoo. It was not until 1949 that the partially destroyed kennel was reconstructed and re-staffed with two bears. The last occupant, Schnute the bear, who suffered from osteoarthritis, died October 11, 2015 at the age of 34. The kennel has been unoccupied ever since.

A bit of insider information. You don't have to go to Bavaria to find baroque chic. It can be found in a monastery relatively close to Berlin.

Sensory Deprivation
Years ago a friend of mine told a story that after heavy rains the cemetery was washed away and coffins were floating on the river. This story came into my mind when I was researching historical crypts of Berlin. I found out that a crypt in Britz was fllooded and the old coffins were floating there in black waters for a long time. It reminded me the floating therapy, where people are looking for nirvana in a floation pod with salt water.
