Mass crop failures expected in England

Half of the potato crop is expected to fai
l as it cannot be irrigated, and even crops that are usually drought-tolerant, such as maize, have been failing.

The group was told β€œirrigation options are diminishing with reservoirs being emptied fast”, and losses of 10-50% are expected for crops including carrots, onions, sugar beet, apples and hops. Milk production is also down nationally because of a lack of food for cows, and wildfires are putting large areas of farmland at risk.

We need to find other food sources, co-ops, community food growing groups, collectives - this is just not a situation that is reliable. Some people might see this as being over cautious but what does one lose by being prepared? On the other hand if one has nothing stored up and nothing growing and there are significant crop failures, then it's not a good situation. Anyway as they say in Spain: "Cada uno al suyo".

Chives and onions both easy to grow and add wonderful flavour to salads or any dish. You can grow then on patios and balconies, you don't need a garden. Anybody who has grown chives or onions - have you got any tips for us?

"Farmers are being forced to pay an ever rising red diesel price, pushing up the cost of producing food.

Running a tractor in a field now costs double what it did 12 months ago, with the price of fuel for a tractor ploughing now over Β£220 per day." Extract from the Scottish Farmer.

We need to get planting for food and find ways to make cheap recipes...

An interesting comment from one of the farmers in this article:

"How in God’s name do the government expect to curb inflation if they don’t step in do something about fuel? It would be the simplest way to help everyone in the country, if they just halved the price of fuel tomorrow rather than trying to come up with a hundred ridiculous schemes to help with the cost of living.”
