When you get caught up in the world, for instance, simply ask yourself, "Who is it that's caught up in the world?" And be truthful, say, "I-am" and go further and ask yourself, "Where did the I come from? What is this I? How did it originate? What is its cause?"
Follow the I, abide in the I and you will soon come to the conclusion, that 'I' does not exist. You will soon come to the conclusion that you are infinite space. And instead of observing objects in the world. You will observe the space that the objects seem to be glued onto.
It's like a little kid cuts out a book. A little kid gets a piece of paper. Cuts out a picture of the sun and pastes the sun on the paper. Cuts out a picture of a tree pastes in on the paper. Cuts out a picture of a man pastes it on the paper.
And they become objects. And the little kid is interested in the objects. But where would the objects be without the paper? The paper is the reality of the objects. And when the kids stopped playing with those objects he simply unpeels the sun and puts the moon in its place. Takes away the clouds and pastes up stars in its place. Takes away the man and puts a woman in its place. Takes away the tree and puts grass and mountains.
But did the paper change? The paper is still the same. And so it is with us. We appear to be mortals. Going through various experiences in the world. There appears to be a sky, planets, stars, others. But I say to you in truth that these are all false. Only the space is real. The space never changes and everything else does. Therefore how can anything that changes be real?

Bhagavan once told a story about a man who wanted to bury his own shadow in a deep pit. He dug the pit and stood in such a position that his shadow was on the bottom of it. The man then tried to bury it by covering it with earth. Each time he threw some soil in the hole the shadow appeared on top of it. Of course, he never succeeded in burying the shadow.
Many people behave like this when they meditate. They take the mind to be real, try to fight it and kill it, and always fail. These fights against the mind are all mental activities which strengthen the mind instead of weakening it.
If you want to get rid of the mind, all you have to do is understand that it is 'not me’. Cultivate the awareness 'I am the immanent consciousness’.
When that understanding becomes firm, the non-existent mind will not trouble you.

CONVERSATIONS WITH #ANNAMALAI SWAMI

When the mind appears every morning don't jump to the usual conclusion, ‘This is me; these thoughts are mine'.
Instead, watch these thoughts come and go without identifying with them in any way.
If you can resist the impulse to claim each and every thought as your own, you will come to a startling conclusion: you will discover that you are the consciousness in which the thoughts appear and disappear. You will discover that this thing called mind only exists when thoughts are allowed to run free. Like the snake which appears in the rope, you will discover that the mind is only an illusion which appears through ignorance or misperception.
You want some experience which will convince you that what I am saying is true. You can have that experience if you give up your life-long habit of inventing an 'I' which claims all thoughts as mine'.
Be conscious of yourself as consciousness alone, watch all the thoughts come and go. Come to the conclusion, by direct experience, that you are really consciousness itself, not its ephemeral contents.
Clouds come and go in the sky but the appearance and disappearance of the clouds don't affect the sky.
Your real nature is like the sky, like space. Just remain like the sky and let thought-clouds come and go. If you cultivate this attitude of indifference towards the mind, gradually you will cease to identify yourself with it.

“You say you want to find the Truth. But it cannot be done. What actually happens is that as you are looking for your factual self, the identity you are looking with begins to disappear. Like a falling star that disappears before it touches the earth, nothing remains but the immutable and formless awareness space—the Self.”

#ANNAMALAI SWAMI – FINAL TALKS

AS: "Don't be afraid of the mind. It's a false tiger, not a real one.
Something that is not real cannot harm you. Fear and anxiety may come to you if you believe that there is a real tiger in your vicinity.
Someone may be making tiger noises as a joke to make you afraid, but when he reveals himself, all your fears go because you suddenly understand that there never was a tiger outside your imagination."

Question: One can have a temporary experience of the Self, the underlying reality, but then it goes away. Can you offer any guidance on how to stabilize in that state?

Annamalai Swami: A lamp that is lit may blow out if the wind is strong. If you want to see it again, you have to relight it. But Self is not like this. It is not a flame that can be blown out by the passing winds of thoughts and desires. It is always bright, always shining, always there. If you are not aware of it, it means that you have put a curtain or a veil in front of it that blocks your view. Self does not hide itself behind a curtain.

You are the one who puts the curtain there, by believing in ideas that are not true. If the curtain parts and then closes again, it means that you are still believing in wrong ideas. If you have eradicated them completely, they will not reappear. While these ideas are covering up the Self, you still need to do constant sadhana.
So, going back to your question, the Self does not need to stabilize itself. It is full and complete in itself. The mind can be stabilized or destabilized, but not the Self.

Question: By constant sadhana, do you mean self-enquiry?

Annamalai Swami: Yes. By strength of practice, by doing this sadhana, this veil will be removed completely. There will be no further hindrances. You can go to the top of Arunachala, but if you are not alert, if you are not paying attention, you may slip and end up at Easanya Math [a Hindu institution at the base of the hill].

You have to make an enormous effort to realize the Self. It is very easy to stop on the way and fall back into ignorance. At any moment you can fall back. You have to make a strong determined effort to remain on the peak when you first reach it, but eventually, a time will come when you are fully established in the Self. When that happens, you cannot fall. You have reached your destination and no further efforts are required. Until that moment comes, constant sadhana is required.
