The Mafia Initiation Ceremony

The initiation ritual for joining the Sicilian "Cosa Nostra" marks the transition to becoming a Mafia affiliate and subsequently a soldier. According to Tommaso Buscetto's account to Judge Giovanni Falcone, a potential member must receive endorsements from at least three Mafiosi. The inductee is told that the Mafia serves to shield the weak from the tyranny of the strong. During the ceremony, the initiate's finger is pricked, and their blood is dripped onto a sacred image, typically of a saint. This icon is then set ablaze while placed in the novice's hand. The initiate must endure the pain, passing the image between hands until it is consumed, all the while pledging the Cosa Nostra oath: "May my flesh burn like this saint if I fail to uphold the mob's code." Joseph Valachi first exposed this tradition in court.
