Novo Nordisk announced a major restructuring to streamline operations, speed up decision-making, and focus resources on growth in diabetes and obesity.
The plan includes cutting about 9,000 jobs globally (5,000 in Denmark) from its 78,400 workforce. The move responds to rising demand, growing competition in obesity treatments, and rising complexity from rapid scaling.
$NVO aims to reinvest savings into science, commercial capabilities, and manufacturing to better serve millions of untreated patients.
CEO Mike Doustdar on the plans:
“As the global leader in obesity and diabetes, Novo Nordisk delivers life-changing products for patients worldwide. But our markets are evolving, particularly in obesity, as it has become more competitive and consumer-
driven. Our company must evolve as well. This means instilling an increased performance-based culture, deploying our resources ever more effectively, and prioritising investment where it will have the most impact – behind our leading therapy areas.”
Novo hopes to save about DKK 8B (about $1.26B) by the end of 2026
The savings will be redirected to growth opportunities in diabetes and obesity, including commercial execution initiatives and R&D programmes
Shares drop 6% in AH trading.
My take
While this may be short-term bad news, I think it is the right decision for Novo. The workforce expanded drastically in the last years, and optimizing it is not a bad plan. The lower profit guidance growth warrants a sell-off today. But I still expect a recovery in the upcoming years.
