Discussions about the weather are some of the most important conversations you can have.

Truth is, discussions about the weather are some of the most important conversations you can have, and we’re told they’re “just small talk” to dissuade us from communing with the shared experience of Nature

Dendroclimatology is the science of determining past climates from trees.
Tree rings are wider when conditions favor growth & narrower when times are difficult.

I've spent thousands of hours studying tree rings. The field is called dendrochronology: https://t.co/sWZyqKkMQz https://t.co/8oodOTWD8o

WindBorne Global Sounding Balloon: https://t.co/tW5lbP95yh

Our Global Sounding Balloon (GSB)’s atmospheric data is already improving both leading physics-based and AI-based weather forecasts. 🌥️

Weather is a global phenomenon: today’s weather in North America, for example, begins forming thousands of miles away, weeks in advance. So, we need to gather atmospheric observations all over the globe – particularly over oceans – to produce the best forecasts for any given location.

Still today, atmospheric data is the most pressing, missing input for building more accurate weather models.

The proof is in the studies: @NOAA and EMC have run several analyses to examine the impact of @WindBorneWx's atmospheric data on the U.S.’ GFS. The results are energizing:

• A @NOAA/EMC study of 2022 tropical cyclones found that a relatively small amount of insitu WindBorne atmospheric data 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐛𝐲 𝐚𝐬 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐬 18%.

• A similar study of the 2023 summer season found that our data 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐛𝐲 15% 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐭𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜, a significant statistical improvement.

• In the same 2023 study, 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐏𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 10% 𝐚𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 with even a small amount of our atmospheric data.

While we run the world’s largest constellation of long-duration weather balloons, we’re still relatively early in building our fully-scaled global balloon network. 🎈

We’re excited to see these accuracy improvements continue to strengthen as we continue to scale our observations in the coming months and years until we reach full continuous global coverage. 🌎

Whistler-mode waves play a role in shaping the Earth’s radiation belts.

Their spatiotemporal distribution is used for forecasting & modeling geospace weather.

Their paths reach into the outer space as far as 3 to 4 times the Earth's radius in the plane of equator and bring energy from lightning discharge to the Earth at a point in the opposite hemisphere.
