Discussions about the weather are some of the most important conversations you can have.

Truth is, discussions about the weather are some of the most important conversations you can have, and weโ€™re told theyโ€™re โ€œjust small talkโ€ to dissuade us from communing with the shared experience of Nature

Dendroclimatology is the science of determining past climates from trees.
Tree rings are wider when conditions favor growth & narrower when times are difficult.

I've spent thousands of hours studying tree rings. The field is called dendrochronology: https://t.co/sWZyqKkMQz https://t.co/8oodOTWD8o

WindBorne Global Sounding Balloon: https://t.co/tW5lbP95yh

Our Global Sounding Balloon (GSB)โ€™s atmospheric data is already improving both leading physics-based and AI-based weather forecasts. ๐ŸŒฅ๏ธ

Weather is a global phenomenon: todayโ€™s weather in North America, for example, begins forming thousands of miles away, weeks in advance. So, we need to gather atmospheric observations all over the globe โ€“ particularly over oceans โ€“ to produce the best forecasts for any given location.

Still today, atmospheric data is the most pressing, missing input for building more accurate weather models.

The proof is in the studies: @NOAA and EMC have run several analyses to examine the impact of @WindBorneWx's atmospheric data on the U.S.โ€™ GFS. The results are energizing:

โ€ข A @NOAA/EMC study of 2022 tropical cyclones found that a relatively small amount of insitu WindBorne atmospheric data

A similar study of the 2023 summer season found that our data ๐ข๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ ๐ญ๐ซ๐จ๐ฉ๐ข๐œ๐š๐ฅ ๐œ๐ฒ๐œ๐ฅ๐จ๐ง๐ž ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐œ๐ค ๐š๐œ๐œ๐ฎ๐ซ๐š๐œ๐ฒ ๐›๐ฒ 15% ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐€๐ญ๐ฅ๐š๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐œ, a significant statistical improvement.

โ€ข In the same 2023 study, ๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฆ ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐œ๐ค๐ฌ ๐ข๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐„๐š๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ง ๐๐š๐œ๐ข๐Ÿ๐ข๐œ ๐ข๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ ๐›๐ฒ 10% ๐š๐ญ ๐ง๐ž๐š๐ซ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ๐ž๐œ๐š๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ฅ๐ž๐š๐ ๐ญ๐ข๐ฆ๐ž๐ฌ with even a small amount of our atmospheric data.

While we run the worldโ€™s largest constellation of long-duration weather balloons, weโ€™re still relatively early in building our fully-scaled global balloon network. ๐ŸŽˆ

Weโ€™re excited to see these accuracy improvements continue to strengthen as we continue to scale our observations in the coming months and years until we reach full continuous global coverage. ๐ŸŒŽ

Whistler-mode waves play a role in shaping the Earthโ€™s radiation belts.

Their spatiotemporal distribution is used for forecasting & modeling geospace weather.

Their paths reach into the outer space as far as 3 to 4 times the Earth's radius in the plane of equator and bring energy from lightning discharge to the Earth at a point in the opposite hemisphere.
