Who sells to index trackers? If you think it's active managers, you would be wrong, at least based on the latest study.

For every share bought by index trackers in a specific company, the company itself issues about 0.7 new shares to the market. Others include short sellers, retail investors and corporate insiders.

Active managers are actually also buying (on aggregate) when index funds are buying a stock.
