सॉक्रेटीस एक महान तत्वज्ञ :
सॉक्रेटीसपेक्षा कोणीही शहाणा मनुष्य नाही. असा दैवी संकेत (Delfic Oracal) चेरफोन या सॉक्रेटीसच्या मित्राला मिळाला होता. परंतु सॉक्रेटीस स्वतःला कधीच शहाणा वा ज्ञानी म्हणून घेत नव्हता. तो नेहमी म्हणायचा, 'मला कशाचे ज्ञान नाही हे मला माहीत आहे.' इतरांना मात्र स्वतःच्या अज्ञानाचे ज्ञान नाही.
राजकीय आणि तत्वज्ञान या ज्ञानशाखामध्ये या महान ग्रीक तत्त्वज्ञ सॉक्रेटिसचे नाव आहे. त्याचा शिष्य प्लेटोने सॉक्रेटिस डायलॉग्स म्हणून बरेचसे साहित्य लिहिले आहे. याच साहित्यावरून आपल्याला सॉक्रेटिस अभ्यासात येतो, हे नाकारून चालणार नाही. कारण सॉक्रेटिसने स्वतःच अस कुठलाच ग्रंथ वा पुस्तक लिहिलेले नाही.
त्याने स्वतःला ओळखण्यासाठी त्याच्या तत्वज्ञानात सद्गुण, नैतिकता आणि चिकित्सक विचार यांना फार महत्त्व होते.
