The pharmaceutical giant Merck will stop producing Gardasil (HPV human papillomavirus, vaccine) at its north Durham facility. About 150 people will be laid off.
Why? Lower global demand. A significant drop. The company sold about 40% less last year compared to 2024, dropping from $8.6 billion in Gardasil revenue to $5.2 billion.
Gardasil is the company's #2 revenue maker. What is #1? Keytruda—a cancer immunotherapy drug, so when their vaccines facilitate various types of cancer; it’s a continuous inflow of cash for them at the patients expense.
