TBH, the only companies I saw as legitimate players in the FMCG space are BeU, Seregela, and Feres.

Those companies are for the long run, and I have legitimate respect for them. The only competitor we recognize is the shady Merkato network of untouchables who set the price of basic commodities as a sovereign. Those MFs are hard to beat even for the government, it's going to take a decade or two with massive government intervention.

Our unofficial motto is

"መርካቶ መር ኢኮኖሚ ወደ አገልግል መር ኢኮኖሚ መቀየር" ነው።

This is where

"የምትቃዥ ከሆነ እንደአቅምህ ቃዥ"

parts come in 😂😂😂😂😂

You have to be crazy enough to be ambitious but not be stupid.

I have been part of dozens of businesses, becoming a CEO back in 2010 E.C with the most pretentious, egoistic, and cringe company name called Andegna Systems PLC. I consulted a couple of huge companies like Lewi Hotel and Resort before I graduated from uni, which I don't even list on my resume 🤷‍♂️

I founded 5 or 6 companies as a CEO or as a CTO, and was involved in over 10 companies.
Every one of them failed for different reasons, except the last one.

You can fail a million times; you just need to succeed once.
Now everyone around me is set for life. Now I do it for the love of the sport.

Anyways, my point is that, I always wanted to tackle real (and big) problems, and try to find the most elegant and simple solution to a complex multi dimensional problems.

how come CTO is more fitting, with all this experience?
To be a CEO, you must be an outdoorsy person. Your whole day should be filled with meetings.

You need to be persistent and resilient. You must break through legal and bureaucratic barriers.

You need great persuasion skills and natural sales talent. You have to sell your ideas.

You must be good with money and able to manage it well.

You need a great network and know how to build one.

You should be compassionate enough to lead your team and inspire them. But you must also be ruthless enough to use any tactic to beat your competitors.

You should be willing to die for this shit or watch your company die.

You need to be ambitious, humble, and visionary.

There is much more to it ... than just the title

I am simply not that person 🤷‍♂️

As a CTO, one of the most important skills you need is the ability to identify talented people from a mile away.

I also need to detect BS from three planets away.

If I had to rank my most important skills, I would say it is even more critical than my technical skills 🤷‍♂️

Let me also share my shortcomings so you can learn

Around three years ago, we created a separate tech company to experiment with a few ideas, with a long-term plan to merge it into a business group including Agelgil.

I was fortunate enough to hire a top-tier dev team that the country could offer. When I got the chance to hire and manage Beka and Theo as devs, and Fraol as an intern, I was honestly was busy with remote job, Agelgil, and this new company with 2 million birr capital to experiment with anything I wanted.

However, I was poor at time management, and the remote job was getting stressful. I didn't utilize them at all and had to let them go in the most unprofessional way.

Imagine having top-tier devs and not using them to their full capacity just because I couldn't manage my time or let Theo lead the team and the product.

But I'm still happy for them. Beka, Theo, and Fraol are why I give my time to codenight. Those dudes can inspire future generations.

Now the whole world knows them, but back then, I hired them for almost for free.

Sometimes I just call them to the office and talk to them about random topics just because I love their ideas and perspectives.

Imagine how much I'm regretting it right now 🤦‍♂️

Sometimes things don't go as you thought they would, and you waste an opportunity of a lifetime.

We could have reinvented the whole fucking world, but I was not a good CTO 🤷‍♂️

We should have been recording it as a podcast.
