Richard Cory (a narrative poem)
Richard >>> rich (it's a royal name, most of the kings were called Richard) Richard also means from a hollow which can mean he was feeling empty inside
He didn't belong to down town cause he was rich
We (people on the pavement) : poor people, people with less privilege, community, unity, Richard was alone unlike them (we)
Sole to crown : head to toe (crown because he was like a king)
Imperially slim : royal kind of slim (good looking)
Arrayed : dressed (quietly arrayed : not showing off, he dresses modestly)
He was always human when he talked : he talked to people without contempt and pretending, he was humble
But still he fluttered pulses when he said, “Good-morning,” (he made people's heart beat faster, excited, they were in awe of him)
In fine : in short, to sum up
Richer than a king : hyperbole
Light : symbol of hope
Meat and bread : metaphor >>> meat : luxury bread : the minimum they could have (poor financial situation)
Night : because there's no light (hope)
Summer (not winter) : because of the difference in their perspectives
Theme : we can't judge a book by its cover
Cross (the challenges of being a mulatto in a racist society) (Identity Crisis)
He was born to a white father and a black mother (a biracial/mulatto person)
Old man / old mother : he's distant from his parents and doesn't feel close to them. (Closer relationship with his mother)
He used to curse his father
My father died in a mansion and my mother died in a cottage (racial discrimination)
He used to hate his parents cause neither the white nor the black community would accept him as one of them so he used to blamed his parents for that. And now he might have come to the understanding that it's the society's fault or just regret it cause they're dead now.
Langston Hughes (the author)

Temperate : mild / steady
The duration of summer is too short
The eye of heaven : the sun
His golden face is often dimmed (because of clouds or sunset)
Beauty falls away from beautiful people
Someone's gonna lose their beauty by chance or accident
But your summer is eternal
You will never lose your beauty
Not even death can say it can dominate you and have you under its shadow
You're not gonna die or lose your beauty cause you're always alive in this poem (sonnet)

Explode : A kind of threat or riot or revolution (Rhetorical Question)
(Blacks had many dreams and expectations that weren't met)
The Road Not Taken
Yellow wood : forest in autumn (The speaker comes to a
He regrets not being able to take both routes
He examined both routes for a long time to see the ends of them (a difficult decision)
Then looked at the other road and saw that it was good too, maybe better because it was grassy and not many people have been walking there (He's bringing excuses to choose one) (wanted wear : Alliteration)
(The roads are symbols of life choices)
They were both the same in the morning
No one had stepped on them
I'll take this one first then come back and take the other one
But I don't know what lies in store cause ways lead to other ways so I don't know if I should ever come back
Mostly sighing means he's not satisfied with the choice he made so he might be regretting his decision

His sister is also working in the yard as a cook
When thr word supper is uttered, the saw falls from the boy's hand because it wants to prove that saws also know what supper is and can get excited
They're shaking hands after the job is done

The Mill (narrative poem)
The wife was waiting for a long time, she was expecting him and he's not there yet so the tea she had prepared is cold
In the morning the man paused before going to work and said "there are no millers anymore" and then he left (there's sth wrong)
She's really worried and scared and she knows she'd go to the mill at last
Meal :
Past : the industry is dying out and with the technology nowadays no one needs millers anymore
The other thing she saw there (her husband hanging from the beam : committed suicide) cleared everything he said
She also thought of committing suicide
She was thinking about drowning herself in the watter of the mill because it wouldn't draw attention and hide her and leave no mark
1. (It's all in her thoughts and imagination. She never went to the mill. She imagined everything because she was too worried)
2. (She has gone to the mill) Metaphoric death

Still I Rise
You can lie about me in the history
You have the power to walk all over me
But still like dust I'll rise
Does my being bold and cheeky chicky upset you?
Does my walking confidently upset you?
Do you wanna see me submissive?
Does my confidence and laughter offend you?
Does my sexiness upset you (cause black women weren't usually wanted)
I've got diamonds between my legs
I'll rise

(The red wheelbarrow could be Marxism, communism, working classes that much depends on them)
When my love swears that she is made of truth
The speaker of the poem is a man who has a beloved
Paradox (I do believe her, though I know she lies)
She's not faithful and he wants her to think he's naive so he tells her he believes her (she's young and he's old and he wants to appear young and unexperienced)
She vainly thinks he's young although she knows he's old
Simply I believe her lies
There's no truth here
Wherefore : why
Why does she say I'm not old
Why do I say I'm old
Pretending to trust each other is love's best habit

She's not faithful and he wants her to think he's naive so he tells her he believes her (she's young and he's old and he wants to appear young and unexperienced)
She vainly thinks he's young although she knows he's old
Simply I believe her lies
There's no truth here
Wherefore : why
Why does she say I'm not old
Why do I say I'm old
Pretending to trust each other is love's best habit
We lie(lie/sleep) (pun) with each other and we're happy with each other
To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time
Make the most of your youth while you can
Lamp of heaven : metaphor
He's to setting (personification)
Time's not gonna stay
ناز نکنید don't be coy
And go get married
When you pass your prime you'll forever have to wait (linger in expectation)
Carpediem (seize the day)
Buffalo Bill’s defunct
Buffalo Bill was a hunter and a famous cowboy (showman)
Defunct : no longer functioning (dead) (dehumanizing him)
Death doesn't care how big and handsome he was
We are seven
The Lady of Shalott
Barley and rye :

Wold :

Camelot

Shalott
Willows whiten

Four gray walls, and four gray towers (prison)
Lily : Shortness of life
And the silent isle (island) imbowers (surrounds) The Lady of Shalott.
When the reapers go to the field in the morning they hear someone singing and whisper to each other : This is the fairy lady of Shalott (she's a supernatural being and they don't know if she exists)

She's weaving something day and night
A magic web with happy and bright colors
There's a curse on her that doesn't allow her to go see Camelot through the window
She doesn't know what the curse is so she just sits and weaves steadily day and night
Since she can't turn back and look at Camelot, she has a mirror and she looks at the reflection of Camelot through the mirror
surly : گستاخ
village-churls : بچه دهاتی
market girls : young happy girls
Abbot : a kind of horse
Page : lad : young boy
Clad : dress
It the mirror she sometimes sees the knights coming and going
She has no loyal knight like other beautiful ladies
Plume :
She sees a newly wed couple and she gets so impressed that she says I am half sick of shadows
Sir Lancelot
blazon'd baldric slung : اون پارچهه که کج میبندن و نشان خانوادگی روشه and used to carry a weapon
His black lock of hair is out of his helmet
She left the web and the loom (دستگاه بافندگی)

East wind : storm (mighty and distrustive)
It's Fall (near death)
She was dressed in white
The curse killed her
Camelot
All the men came out to see what the river had brought including Sir Lancelot
They were partying and suddenly saw the lady and went silent
But Sir Lancelot
Victorian Woman : Angel in the house (she's supposed to stay in the house and not leave)
But she did leave and got punished
She's an artist cause she was wearing and artists are all isolated
She was a nun and wasn't allowed to leave there
She was blinded by love
