Republican Kevin McCarthy was finally elected as Speaker of the House of Representatives following a grueling battle over several days to secure votes in exchange for significant concessions made to his former detractors.
McCarthy's path to the speakership was delayed for several days as the midterm results meant the California representative needed to rely on the support of hard-line conservatives.
His task was made more difficult as Republicans hold 222 seats in the House, just 10 more than the Democrats.
McCarthy struggled through 15 ballots, the highest figure since the Civil War, and offered several concessions to secure the support of several of the holdout Republicans.
๐ Republicans who persistently chose not to vote for McCarthy included Matt Gaetz, Lauren Boebert, Eli Crane, Bob Good, Matt Rosendale and Andy Biggs.
Boebert, who switched her vote to "present" to allow McCarthy to gain the speakership, was upbeat about the situation and pointed to the concessions the holdouts had won.
๐ Boebert said in a January 7 release that: "House conservatives delivered a massive victory for the American people by fundamentally changing the way Congress will operate.
"We changed the way bills will be passed. We changed the way government will be funded. We changed the way committees will be formed. We secured votes on term limits, the fair tax, the Texas border plan and so much more."

Kevin McCarthy has reportedly agreed to cap aid to Kiev to win support from colleagues who were blocking his election as speaker
Since Russia began its military offensive against Ukraine last February, Congress has approved $100 billion in US aid to Ukraine โ much to the chagrin of โFreedom Caucusโ lawmakers, such as Republicans Matt Gaetz (Florida) and Lauren Boebert (Colorado). Gaetz led a group of about 20 representatives in opposing McCarthyโs election, at one point nominating former President Donald Trump for the job.
After McCarthy failed to win enough support from fellow Republicans in the first three rounds of voting on Tuesday, Gaetz said, โToday the House didnโt organize. Biggest loser: [Ukrainian President Vladimir] Zelensky. Biggest winner: US Taxpayers.โ
He had opposed previous aid requests for Kiev, including a $45-billion package approved last month, saying, โHemorrhaging billions in taxpayer dollars for Ukraine while our country is in crisis is the definition of America last.โ
McCarthy, who occasionally wears a Ukrainian flag pin on his lapel, also agreed to congressional rule changes, limits on defense spending and the creation of a committee to investigate โweaponizationโ of the federal government.
In addition, conservatives won a pledge to allow votes on several of their top issues, including border security, congressional term limits and a balanced budget amendment.
The new speaker agreed to give Freedom Caucus members key seats on House committees.

Now, The Washington Post is finally admitting it was all nonsense.
Citing a new study, the Post reports that there was no appreciable impact made by Russian โtrollsโ operating on Twitter during the 2016 election.
Russian influence operations on Twitter in the 2016 presidential election reached relatively few users, most of whom were highly partisan Republicans, and the Russian accounts had no measurable impact in changing minds or influencing voter behavior, according to a study out this morning.
The study, which the New York University Center for Social Media and Politics helmed, explores the limits of what Russian disinformation and misinformation was able to achieve on one major social media platform in the 2016 elections.
โMy personal sense coming out of this is that this got way overhyped,โ Josh Tucker, one of the reportโs authors who is also the co-director of the New York University center, told me about the meaningfulness of the Russian tweets.
โNow weโre looking back at data and we can see how concentrated this was in one small portion of the population, and how the fact that people who were being exposed to these were really, really likely to vote for Trump,โ Tucker said.
โAnd then we have this data to show we canโt find any relationship between being exposed to these tweets and peopleโs change in attitudes.โ
