As most 23-year-olds, I had my moments where I questioned Swami when things were not working out or when I faced obstacles. I would question “Why me? What is the reason behind this?”

Indeed, this past year had not been easy with its challenges and work environments shifting online. There was one experience that helped me understand the importance of taking on and practising a sadhana (spiritual practise). In 2021, I was faced with a decision that had the possibility of changing my life. At the time I was participating in the Sri Sathya Sai Sadhana of Love Programme for Sai Young Adults and was encouraged to pick a sadhana of my choice. After speaking to a friend who told me about Omkar, I decided to practise this. Every day, without fail, even though the times differed, I ensured I did my 21 OMs. As the days progressed, I felt a strong connection almost like a pull; I needed Swami’s approval for my decision to indicate that He was happy.

On September 3, 2021 I had His darshan in the form of a dream. In the dream, the smell of vibuthi (holy ash) was so strong. Swami was there, and next to Him was Prema Sai, His hands were like a cross, one holding the other and His hair was curly with an intense shine. I was so absorbed by the sight of both Avatars and the scent of vibuthi; it was so divine. They both said just three words to me and I remember waking up with this surge of energy that I had made the right decision.

This incident made me realise that sometimes we go through a lot; we have our battles and feel lost, we feel like Swami is not listening to us, or that our prayers are not being answered. However, when you undertake a sadhana, no matter how simple or difficult it may be, make it an offering to Him. Ensure that those few moments that you engage in this sadhana, is just between you and Him. You will feel this change occurring and you are establishing this heart-to-heart connection with the Lord. At that moment you and Him are one – all you need to do is just pause, introspect, and reconnect. (Sershan, South Africa)

It was a cold wintry evening in 2015 with the polar vortex sweeping North America. I had stepped out to catch my bus home after work. The queue at the bus stop was extremely long. No choice did I have but to join the queue, which moved as slow as tortoises. Close to 25 minutes later, I was the second one in line and that’s when the real struggle began. Knowing my position in line, somehow made the weather appear colder, or maybe, it was. I had maxed out on all the winter wear I had on me. I was struggling to even keep my eyes open, and the harsh winds seemed to get my eyes all teared up. Another 20 minutes had passed, and I felt I could take the cold no longer. I was so close to leaving, but I knew that would mean going through this ordeal all over again.

I had the habit of listening to experiences of others with Swami each day at work, to live vicariously through the experiences other devotees had with Swami, as a means of reaffirming my faith in Him. After 45 minutes in the biting cold, I shut my eyes. I was tired and angry. At that moment, with ‘wind-caused’ tears, I said, “What Swami, You’ll help only some special devotees and Your students, not me?” I finished this thought that my monkey mind had spewed out. When I opened my eyes, three huge buses were waiting to take us all in. In the silence of my prayer, I heard nary a sound of them wheeling their way down on cobblestone roads, let alone the sound of the engine.

One might argue, that’s a coincidence, right? But that’s not the point of this story. In that one moment, Swami had taught me that a prayer said from any part of the world reaches the Swami in one’s heart instantly. A string of ‘multiple coincidental answered prayers’ is what helps one affirm faith in Him. I went home with a warm fuzzy feeling knowing that ‘I too am special for Him’. (Madhuri, UK)
