🇷🇺🇲🇱 According to Casus Belli on Twitter, it appears Yevgeny Prigozhin was in Mali shortly before his untimely death yesterday.

He was reportedly seeking to recruit a local Malian militia to support Wagner operations in the country.

🇲🇱🇳🇪🇳🇬 A wave of posts on Twitter are claiming that the military leader of Mali, Assimi Goïta, has threatened to invade Nigeria's capital Abuja if ECOWAS invades Niger, in order to install the "rightful winner of the 2023 election."

Curiously, the accounts making these posts appear to be mainly supporters of Peter Obi, who lost the 2023 Nigerian election despite major popular support.

As of now this statement appears to be fake news. Sahel Intel will be watching closely to see if Col. Goïta makes such a major statement as this.

🇳🇬 Mass rail transit to be revived in Nigeria's capital

Nigeria's new Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has announced that Abuja Rail Mass Transit will be restarted and expanded.

The first line of the light rail system began operations in 2018, however suffered from low ridership due to passing mainly through undeveloped, low-density areas. Service was discontinued in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and never resumed.

With the recent end of Nigeria's longstanding fuel subsidy making driving more expensive, and new support for rail transit, the stage could be set for a significant adoption of public transportation in the Nigerian capital, until now dominated by private vehicles.

🇳🇪🇫🇷 Niger expels French ambassador

The Nigérien military government has ordered the expulsion of Sylvan Itté, French Ambassador to Niger, within 48 hours.

The reasons cited for this move, in the above document, are that Mr. Itté has refused to interact with the junta government (i.e. recognize it), and that his country has continued to act contrary to the interests of Niger.

🇱🇾🇹🇩❗️The Libyan National Army (LNA), which rules over Eastern Libya, launched a major military operation near southern border after LNA Forces and Chadian Army clashed on the Libyan-Chadian Border, reports Arab News
— Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army has launched a military operation to secure the southern border, it said on Friday, after fighting near the area resumed between the government of Chad and a rebel group trying to unseat it.

Chad’s President Mahamat Idriss Deby said on Sunday that the army was again fighting the Libya-based Chadian Front for Change and Concord or FACT group, which quit a ceasefire last week amid clashes.

FACT had fought alongside the LNA as one of many mercenary groups involved in Libya’s civil war, researchers on Libya say, but they were on opposing sides during fighting two years ago when Deby’s father was killed.

LNA spokesperson Ahmad Mismari said the operation would involve land and air forces. An LNA media unit distributed photographs of Haftar’s son, Saddam Haftar, overseeing the operation with other LNA officers.
