🇷🇺 🇿🇦 South Africa’s energy crisis is fueling a boom in consumer solar panels. Their capacity has increased by 453% in just two years.
📈 According to Eskom, the state-owned energy monopoly, residential rooftop solar panels in South Africa “grew” by 2.6 GW in 2023. And over the past two years, their capacity has increased more than fivefold. South Africa is projected to become the world’s tenth largest market for consumer photovoltaic systems in 2024.
🤝 Our experts estimate that the trend toward household autonomy and energy independence in South Africa is likely to continue for at least several more years, providing good export prospects for Russian manufacturers seeking to conquer growing overseas markets and their specialized niches. This, in fact, reflects Russia’s conceptual approaches to developing high-tech areas of production and export activities.
❓The key questions of the African energy agenda and the participation of Russian companies in the implementation of joint projects are planned to be discussed during the continent’s largest industry event, African Energy Week.
🗓️ 4–8 November

🇿🇦🇷🇺 Africans striving for beneficial partnership over charity, South African municipal official says
Russian business sees South Africa as an equal partner, instead of looking down on it in cooperation, Lungelo Buthelezi, Project Executive eThekwini Municipality told Sputnik Africa on the sidelines of the International Municipal BRICS Forum in Moscow.
💬 "As African people where we want to be seen as partners as opposed to be seen as beggars," he explained.
South Africa has a lot to offer its partners, and whoever engages with it "should be engaging at a partner level as opposed to a master-servant kind of setup, not insinuating anything," he added.
💬 "I have found that with every Russian business person that I have engaged with, they've really seen us as partners as opposed to one being superior to the other," Buthelezi noted.
The official highlighted that Russia has a lot to offer and provides things that are really needed at a cheaper price. He mentioned oil, gas, and "a whole lot of other industries" that could establish themselves in South African cities.
Buthelezi explained that the reason for choosing Russia as a partner is because it makes sense from a business, social, and political perspective.
In addition, you can listen to the full interview in the upcoming #AfroVerdict podcast, with highlights from the Sixth International Municipal BRICS Forum hosted by Moscow this week!
