Murder of women - which IDF has plenty of - has a wild effect on male psyche. You can easily ignore male deaths or think of them as necessary sacrifice. But something about the death of females triggers a completely different response. Don't wanna get overly conspiratorial and replace plain old incompetence with a premediated scheme, though.

Soviet involvement in the whole Israel-Palestine affair was a major one. It was Stalin who was first to recognize Israel as a sovereign state. Soviets at the time (1948) hoped for an alliance with Jewish kibutz socialists. It turned out that the Israeli socialists decided to betray USSR and cozy up to a new ally in the face of US. Thus friendship with Israel has ended and a moderate support of the Palestinians has begun

Those wild swings indicated that USSR had no idea what to do with this place. Israelis betrayed them, Palestinians were happy to receive all the military aid they wanted - but did not want to reciprocate and strive towards the soviet ideal either.
